Hello all! Quick question. So I have a 24 GT with the PP, so the bottom right grille has that little shield, while the driver side does not, for the oil cooler. I purchased an aftermarket dark horse conversion kit, which didn’t come with that shield. Do any of you know if that shield is really needed? It only covered part of the washer fluid reservoir. Picture attached.

From what I have read from others on this forum that's where the ECU lives. I wouldn't remove it, personally.

Yeah I’ve seen that too, but from looking at it with the bumper fully removed, I believe that was a myth. Under that vent is strictly the washer reservoir and its lines.

Didn't they change how one of the additional track coolers worked from the Mach 1 to the Dark Horse which is why it is blocked off in the DH now? The Mach 1 has both of those open.

I’m not entirely sure. Maybe the dark horse has an extra cooler there, but I doubt it considering it’s covered on dark horses as well. Part of me thinks it was there for 1) to protect the reservoir and 2) for cosmetics, no one wants to see a big white reservoir on the corner.

Along with the windshield wiper fluid tank, the ECU does live in that area. It would likely see significantly more moisture without that cover if you drive in wet conditions.

I’m not entirely sure where people get this from. The ECU is not there, I can confirm that because I ripped my bumper off, I know everything that’s under it. There is definitely no ECU down there.

Did you look under the car back near the passenger wheel well? Its not right behind the bumper cover. That block off in the front passenger side lower grill closes off a small void where the ECU or component that looks like the ECU/PCM/ECCU/etc. When I had the undertray off on mine, i could clearly see it. I should of taken a picture when I had it off but I didn't and am not removing anything for a picture at this time.
At low speed/ idle, moisture shouldn't cause any issue with that block off removed. However; at highway speed, i'd imagine that quite a bit of water would get back there. Would it hurt, not sure. Would it benefit anything else to remove that cover, not likely.

Interesting. Will definitely need to check. I have a picture of the bumper fully removed, so I can see anything and everything beneath it, didn’t see anything dangerous.

this is a screenshot from the workshop manual instructions on PCM removal

in the diagrams, you can see the front marker light as well as the cover for that right vent

Really interesting. Probably why I didn’t see it. It’s not really in the area that’s covered, it’s more in and up. I see. So I should definitely find something to cover that up somehow.

Probably can’t really reach it nor can you see it. I sure as hell can’t. I’m more concerned about water, weather. But my coworkers tellin me PCM’s are literally waterproof so.

true, but it still might be possible if someone knew what they were looking for. as for the waterproof thing, it probably is IP65 or IP66, but i would definitely not risk possibly exposing the module that controls the engine and transmission to more water than it already is

Yeah. I gotta figure out what to do. Dark horse conversion didn’t come with a cover.
