Hi members, thinking of putting 20inch rims on my 10 speed convertible with standard non magnetic suspension.Any significant changes to cowl shake, ride comfort or road noise or only minimal effects?
Thank you for any replies.

Depends on what you wrap it with. Cars going to ride higher but can be mitigated with smaller side walls. Smaller side walls contribute to rougher rides but can be mitigated by getting bigger side walls.

This is my stock vs 20" setup.

It really depends on the tires. Sure, larger the rim the rougher it will be in general but you can easily compensate with the correct set of tires to make up the difference.

I have the premium optional 20s on my Mustang and honestly I am impressed with the ride quality and especially the grip of these tires.

I have the 20x9s on my Vert, I love them. I personally think it handles better than the 19" that I drove and you get better tires. No issue with noise or roughness IMHO

I absolutely agree.

I believe a Smoother ride & less Road noise has more to do with the Tire Brand and Tread Design?
I know Michelin Tires make more Road Noise after they wear down quite a bit.

I’m running a staggered 20” setup on mine: Front 20X9 ET25–Rear 20X10.5 ET38 w/ NITTO NT555 G2’s, Front 255/35-Rear 285/35. Tire pressure for the street is: Front 42PSI—Rear 32PSI. Super quiet and handles like a slot car. Definitely feel things (like pebbles) more acutely. 😂

The short answer is yes. By how much is the guessing game as well as how sensitive you are too it. Tire choice makes a big difference, but the problem is that you can't really know until they are mounted and your money is gone. Different models and brands at the same sidewall height may be stiffer than others. You can read reviews online, but they're all non-scientific, amateur subjective so its hard to go by that. You pretty much just take your chances. The only criteria that you can read that you can really depend on is the height of the sidewall and you know for sure that you can get more sidewall with smaller diameter wheels.

I had to buy my Jaguar with the Portfolio package to get the seats that I wanted, but that came with 19" Caravela wheels. I didn't have it a few days before I busted one and the ride quality was far worse than my previous Jag. So I bought a set of the base 18" Vela wheels, gaining 3/4" of sidewall and it was day and night difference in ride quality (I think they look better too). It was not the magic carpet ride of my earlier Jaguar sedan with its 16" wheels but it was a big improvement. Personally, I wouldn't sacrifice ride quality for style. If I was still a young man doing autocross every other Sunday, then it might make sense, but not for commuting on local public roads that haven't seen any repair since the asphalt was laid down in the 50s and aren't likely to in my lifetime.

I had a 19 gt with 20x10 squared running rovos capetown wheels on cheapo lionhart lh 5's 20 275 35 came on the wheel. Rode really rough and felt everything x10 from the stock wheels ride. On my 24 gt I went with dc8 20x 8.5 front with 255 35 20 and 20x 10 285 30 20 rear and nitto nt555 g2's ride is really good. You don't want to under or over buy a set of wheels if you just doing spirited driving dropping mad cash on velgen or similar ultralight weight wheels with sport cup 2' or better for a daily or just weekend driver is kinda silly. If your tracking on weekends maybe.

I tested a 2024 GT with 19s and a 2024 EB with 20s at the dealer, one right after the other over the same road conditions, and decided I didn't want the 20s because I could feel more vibration in the ride. I'm all for "feeling the road," and in fact, hate driving my husband's Edge because it's too smooth feeling, but the 20s just weren't comfortable, IMO.

I don't know what exact tires were on the 20" wheels, but the pictures show Goodyear. The tires on the 19s were Continentals. Dunno if either of those are good or bad, but there it is.
