I’ve been a home theater sound enthusiast since about 1987 or so. This was about the date Radio Shack came out with a rear channel decoder. With a small 15 watt stereo amp and a cheap pair of Realistic speakers, I was ready for the big show! Not!
At the time, there was a dearth of surround sound on the little screen, save for Star War and Jaws (et. Al.) on HBO and/or SHO. Except for an ad for the 1988 Mustang! When it played, suddenly the back of the living room lit up with the roar a 302 with twice pipes (as my latino neighbor called them) replete with a pass by! I was in seventh heaven!
Since that time, I have always wondered why automobile manufactures didn’t jump on the band wagon. I’m sure aftermarket car stereo shops offer it, but unless you owned a high-end vehicle, you were lost! Until, that is, I experienced my 2024 Eco-Boost Premium’s sound system. It does do Dolby 5.1, and in fact it does it well if the sound system is set up correctly.
All of the controls in the right hand display are self explanatory, save for one, the occupant setting. Rather than set it for driver only (who else would want to ride with us?), set it for all passengers. Oh! You also need Apple Car Play or Android’s equivalent, and a source of material. In my car, that’s Apply Music’s Spacial Audio, aka Dolby Digital. You’ll also need to set up the compression free settings on your iPhone or Android phone. Then either playing from memory or live downloading, you too can enjoy an almost theater-type surround sound. Not as good as a 7.5.4 in a 14X14 bedroom with 4,000 watts of audio like I’m used to, but nonetheless entertaining! Enjoy!
As a PS, you can load music onto a thumb drive, plugged into the below dash USB or USB-C ports. The stored songs must be either mp3 or mp4a, as standard mp4 sound/videos will not ply.
