I'm pretty sure the designers used the fighter cockpit analogy for S550, too!

Also, its amazing how much the focus groups' requirements have changed 8 years. This is what they (we?) wanted for S550.....and, truth be told, it's partly what I wanted for S650
"We know Mustangs really well. We sit down and we brainstorm. What does the vehicle need to have? What do we need to do with this one? It's the 50-year model, so we need to make sure it's great," Doyle said. "What we learned from this, realistically, from the first market research was four inviolables that you could not leave out of the interior. One of them was round analog gaugesālarge, round analog gauges. They wanted the instrument panel to be symmetrical. They wanted a symmetrical feel to the interior. They wanted the symmetrical double brow on the instrument panel. And, they wanted premium authentic materials."

The interior is 15% away from being a run-away hit. Itās not even on the design team, itās the bean counters at Ford. Their sketches sell the ideology behind the changes, but whatās missing are just a few key elements:
ā¢ new seats (the sporty shells pictured are totally feasible and are remarkably similar to something youād see in an Elantra/Veloster N for instance, but weāre stuck with the super basic seats from the S550 and the same Recaros that weāre introduced in the S197 Boss over 10 years ago. They want a modern interior thatās more driver focused but weāre still getting the La-Z-Boys)
ā¢ new door cards and paneling (they donāt match the changes made to the rest of the car and you can tell because thereās zero flow or continuity from the dash to the doors)
ā¢ a display that looks upscale (black levels, bezel size)
ā¢ some kind of brightwork to enhance the dash and make it stand out
Literally just new, more upscale looking seats wouldāve gone a long way.

Remember that the recaros are now heated and cooled, but you are right about the la-z-boys

Not gonna lie, theyāre excellent and strike a perfect blend of comfort while giving awesome lumbar and lateral support. Theyāre definitely better to daily in than the slightly flashier and more aggressive shells found in the 350/500, but they do look dated, especially when other companies are releasing awesome looking buckets. But yeah the heated/cooling function is dank. Finally.

I think you mean the orientation looks terrible. The screens themselves are actually pretty high quality with good black levels and resolution. The only thing I would change about them is the bezel - a little too big for my liking.

Well, I'll just have one comment on the new design evolution: yes, you can still screw up the car even though the team is "updating". But the pressure to introduce an entirely new platform with both a totally new exterior and interior was way more risky. Just ask Kemal Curic, Dave Pericak and the rest of their team...see A Faster Horse. So, let's just keep things in perspective here...
