Enhanced Central Gateway, AKA, the GateWay Module. The ECG/GWM connects the different segments of the car's Controller Area Network together, much like an network switch.

I could not find a specific reference as to why the patch is being fielded. I suspect the update is like patching any other system (in this example, the car's CAN): better efficiencies in power requirements, processing or security.

To keep vulnerabilities or liabilities to a minimum, I'd think Ford would keep details of any update, slight.

I believe CAN means Chassis Area Network. While on this subject...

CANs are obviously digital in nature, which means their third order harmonics are rich, and extend well into the VHF region. For this reason, they're the bane of amateur radio operators. For non radio operators, these harmonics are the main reason a lot of vehicle manufacturers have switched to FM/Sat only (no AM) radios.

Am I crazy or does my car seem to be shifting differently since I got the update?

Bosch was the original user of CAN. It was then what I called it.
CAN was designed by a team led by the Bosch researchers Siegfried Dais and Uwe Kiencke. But I've never seen it referred to as 'Chassis Area Network' in any of thier published specifications.

@SALEEN032 ..... wins the prize. I have had several boats (Big) that also had multiple gateway systems and CANs (control area network) to enable and control communication (coms) of the data stream on the data highways to interact with the ECUs. On my biggest boat I had the Mercruiser Axius system that used 3 GPS units. I could hold place within 3 feet in a high wind with a joystick or go absolutely sideways if i had a 16" clearance fore and aft. I had one the first one in the area I lived and you should have seen the eyes pop the first time I fit my cruiser between two moored boats at a gas dock with about a foot fore and aft. too funny. That said out CAN BUS system is easily exploited by thieves unless we take countermeasures.
