Wow. Lots of opinions here.

I'm new to the Mustang as of 24 Aug 2023. That said, I've been a fan for a long time and have a respectable knowledge of cars, the aftermarket, manufacturing, and supply chain.

Random related thoughts:

Government regulation sucks - but it's a mixed bag. Safety and necessity being the mother of invention has driven manufacturers and the aftermarket to come up with some insanely cool workarounds and improvements.

Personalization from Ford or other tuners isn't where I'd love it to be, but there ARE options if your pockets are deep enough.

Saleen design hasn't evolved with the times and what they've done with the S650 looks like a half aborted beluga.

RTR is doing really great stuff COSMETICALLY and working WITH Ford to do more. Mystichrome shouldn't be $100k though.

The Shelby 350 is a joke IMO. $110k? I don't see it. I do like the looks, particularly the rims and grill treatment.

Unsprung weight (wheels/tires/brakes) can drastically change the handling characteristics of a car. Better/lighter/wider rims and quality tires > 100 hp in most applications. Other weight loss also much more of a benefit than adding power IMO.

800+ hp is monstrous and completely unhinged IMO. I'm glad people want and do this to drive innovation, but that much on the street is just too much.

3D printing is massively underutilized by both the aftermarket and owners. There are a ton of options and nearly limitless potential for those that can get creative. My son and I are working on this to create the styling I personally want (the blackbird).

been sharing this for a while. The s550 and 650 are really old school platforms thst nrver reinvented anything to comply with regulations or performance demands.

the suspension, glass, frame, body panels, exhaust, interior filler materials etc. are all much heavier then need be. The current platform could lose 200 lbs as-is if ford cared to do anything there.

but that’s not the point of this generation for them. The s650 exists to keep the amustang alive while they figure out what to do.

it is an OLD platform that is extra heavy due to the additional reinforcement snd modificatiins made to keep that platform moving forward. This is ford’s breather round, doing the bare minimum.

it’s the 70’s over again, where it was the same old car, but now either some vinyl glued to the roof. It’s the same old car, but now with a diffrrrnt horse sticker. It’s the same old car? But ford thinks they are fooling people by calling third party collab efforts from RTR a new model. It’s easy to just let a tuner mod the car s bit and boom, call it s new thing.

the s550 was heavier than the s197 because it was the same old platform, but with stuff added to it to hold a new body and meet new criteria. Meanwhile tje Camaro was much lighter than its predecessor (and the mustang itself) because it started on the right foot with a new platform (amortized among s range of cars).

this generation is s wash. It just is. We may get an exciting car like a cobra coming, either msjor firepower, but it will still be saddled by the old, heavy platform.

it will take s new platform specifically designed to be lighter and tighter from inception. The other CARS this platform can facilitate, such as a new 4 door performance sedan, etc. can be accommodated by the new amustang platform and be modified to suit other needs.

but the mustang needs to get the unmodified, light platform.

Ford has the superior engine technology to GM across the board. They’ve also caught up in suspension engineering. But chassis development is sad to see lagging like this.

Ford has a recent sub platform that accommodates cars and crossovers. But not maximizing the potential of the cars specifically. This is because aFord goolidd add holy ended car production, which put the mustang in the difficult position of being an expensive proposition to modernize, because their are no other models to share amortization of its advancements with.

people want cars. Hyundai and Toyota are reaping the rewards of betting big on cars. It may not be the f series market, nothing is.

it’s a worthwhile profitable market and one that enables bringing cultural icons like the mustangs into the future in a relevant way instead of just dragging a link to the past around for posterity.

the Mustang has the potential to do it all over again. It just needs people who care in the right positions.

culturally, there is a massive cultural shift in the Mustangs homeland towards a mindset that favors things like the amustang. But not an old, underdeveloped relic. An actual NEW exciting car to be enthusiastic about.

a new specific platform that prioritizes lightweighting snd rigidity would be huge. Wrap the thing around the v8 with smaller engines as an option for those who want that, and modify the platform for other cars.

But this generation is a wash. God help is if the Mustang ends up in the recent EV/SUV/Crossover platform out now - or just as bad - carrying over the DC2+ for another decade or so.
I get the passion. We are all Ford fans that want great things and see it succeed but the current method of add a bigger tire, new fenders, or supercharger cannot catch competition from newer more updated cars.

The gt500 with 110 more HP could barely, just barely, beat the zl1 1LE at a race track.

10 years ago a gt350R could relatively keep up with a GT3 Porsche. Thats how great it was!! And why some of us are so frustrated. now? It’s laughable. Not even close.

kinda mixed on this, i would need to see an actual picture to give my thoughts. i will say that it looks like it will be blocking the marker lights and they havent added those onto the sketch

so... you get high horsepower numbers without supercharging it by... supercharging it?
With the same Whipple supercharger even. lol

thst was my point.
Ford has the killer firepower. But it gets all soaked up and sandbagged by a sloppy, heavy, outdated platform.

it needs a tight light new platform to excel.
It was embarassing watching the gt500 barely beat the zl1 1le. Should have stomped.

the regular Camaro SS was able to keep pace with the much more expensive gt350 which had 70 more horsepower and was a specialty model. It took the r model to beat the 1le.

it comes down to starting point. The platform. The alpha was inherently lighter, tighter, better distributed, and maximized every bit of oomph it got.

meanwhile tje s550/s650 just soaked up most of the power before it reached the ground. Power looked good on the dyno but, didn’t translate well to the strip or track. You’d always have to have a disproportionate power advantage to win.

contrast that to the Fox body days where the f bodies had to add power as a staged to win.

this gen can be exciting but really only with disproportionately massive firepower under hood.

We’ve seen the Camaro do more with less. It’s hard to take but it is what it is. Now we are seeing the c8 corvette benefit exponentially from an all new platform designed from the ground up to maximize everything. And it didn’t have to break the bank to do it.

as a Ford fan, it’s extremely frustrating to see Ford continue to do the minimum investment, knowing that’s its sandbagging the mustang from the hit. No matter what you do, performance is an uphill battle.

the crazy thing is, a better platform thst lighter and maximizes performance also results in better fuel mileage. You’d think that would be reason enough.

Except for the fact this car is not street legal. It’s this part that prevents the RTR’s, Roush’s, and Shelby’s of the world from building the car your all wanting.
no.

the Gtd should have exceeded the zr1. It’s more expensive, had multi stick doing the heavy work, and still gets whooped for much less cash.

something’s really upside down here and it’s not because “oh, but that’s impossible!” Or “you guys just want things that can’t rven be legal!”

it is possible, it SHOUKD be happening now. But instead, Ford just has small vision and even less investment in thst vidion. In short, it’s a sucky time to be a mustang fan.

sure, we get the Gtd that most of us will never see the inside of. We can some pandering third party rtr thing that ford says is their new model, we get a dark horse no one asked for. So it sounds like something. But instead the end, we get stuck in the losing bracket despite paying through the nose for the privilege.

it’s wrong. Needs to change asap.

It’s a great time to be a Mustang fan. So many options to choose from. Certainly better than being a Camaro or Dodge fan.
yeah yeah. We get it.

And while it’s true that we still have the mustang, we don’t want to be lulled to sleep, watching our favorite car die a slow and painful death by investment starvation and then hear ford from on about there is no market. Of course tje market dries up for an “enthusiast car” when the enthusiasm gets drowned by

Bruh.

a beginning of the year newsletter talking up the latest deal isnt some long-forecasted vision of the future. We get that you really want Ford to drop the Mustang we know and love for an electrified suv or 4 door ecoboost.

but Ford isn’t that dumb. They know the market is smarter now. People don’t want to pay new money for old stuff.

You keep saying that Ford has the better engine tech., but GM is the one with the 1,064 hp 5.5 liter 8,500 rpm V8, and the N/A 8,600 rpm V8 with 670 hp. Plus, GM also has the LT5, which makes as much power as the Predator. It also has the LT4, not as powerful as the Predator, but it can handle 1,000 hp on stock internals and beats a Voodoo by 125 hp and over 200 ft-lbs of torque, and it's physically smaller than the Voodoo. It also has titanium intake valves and other exotic materials (rotocast aluminum heads, as an example). On a per liter basis, sure the Ford DOHC engines have more hp than the pushrod V8s, but that stat is irrelevant because of the different styles. Look at the actual physical size of the engines - the GM 6.2 liter small block fully dressed is much smaller than the Coyote. Plus, the pushrod gets just as good if not better gas mileage than Ford's DOHC engines, has variable valve timing, and other tech. matching Ford's.

GM has more high-performance engines than Ford. LT1, LT2, LT4, LT5, LT6, LT7, not to mention the turbo V6 in the CT4-V Blackwing. Don't forget about the older LS7, a 7,000 rpm pushrod small block.

it’s the tech behind it.

a twin turbo 5.2 would make more power at less displacement than the zr1 engine. Even though the zr1 is wrung out with a flat plane crank. But ford is stuck supercharging for cheapo reasons.

GM is developing a new line of v8s. Wil be interesting to see how those shake out. Also be interesting to see Fords answer. Ford is advertising on their f150 site that they are continuing with v8s.

the 4 and 6 bangers are amazingly well built.

If the car came wity the engine from tje factory, it would actually be cheaper. They wouldn’t have to package, market, etc.

But a little over dark horse money for 1000+ hp? I don’t think many would say no to thst. The suspension and brakes would need to be addressed. So let’s start the dark horse at a realistic price, add in this engine, factor in economies of scale and remove the andded expense of selling engine ans an crate, and then we pay $80k. Sounds pretty dang good. I think Ford would sell a bunch of those.

Any given Sunday: Take the boys to church on Sunday, “accidentally peel out of the bark lot, exhaust and supercharger wailing, apologize to the pastor as the drive to movies commences, go to in n out burger to fuel up after, grab the wife, drive to the beach along highway 66, grab another bit in Huntington, stop for a stroll and window shopping, get her home, off to the gym, embarassing a few mopars, c8 corvettes, and a lambo along the way, get in a good workout, head home, neighbors peeking out the windows to see if the sound they just heard by your house is Armageddon, decide no. It’s just your new hot rod mustang. Eat dinner with the fam, everyone sneaking peaks through the dining room window at the mustang you purposely parked in the driveway so people know what’s up. Go to bed full of satisfaction and dreams of trips to the strip to come. Drive to work the next day, getting all your coworkers flustered, etc. etc.

too bad the engine isn’t street legal.

would absolutely LOVE to see Shelby do the work to get this bad boy smogged and fit with a DCT.

actually, just take what they did with the super snake but drop this bad boy in.

Could be the new SA GT500 or Super Snake.
