Adaptive cruise control will automatically lower the speed and automatically return the speed to the preset / selected speed. The acc function happens before collision alert and if functioning correctly will prevent a collision alert (unless another driver dives into the gap - the predetermined following gap)
I have cruise on my 24 Mustang GT. works great touch brake, then just hit the preset right back up to the setting. I absolute love the warnings on the mirrors also.

Agreed the cruise works well, even the adaptive while manually changing gears. Using adaptive ‘tractor beam style’ (as in cruise set to 75 but the car just ahead is doing 70) you just need to keep an eye on curves and following distance. On occasion the car in front may slip out of view and your car will adapt to the lack of an obstacle and attempt to reach the set speed.

Can you set the distance to the car in front of you short enough to avoid cars you are about to overtake squeezing themselves between yourself and the car you're following?
Had a KIA recently as a rental and even a 16-wheeler would move to my lane without feeling the need of setting the blinker 😬

Toyota’s Safety Sense rules. You have to disengage.
Gotta' remember to put the air quotes around "safety" when you're talking about Toyota.

Yes, you can adjust the follow distance. I'm not a fan of cruise control, but I have to admit Ford, BMW, and Porsche seem to have it figured out.

You can set a distance, but it's not enough to keep clowns from driving like clowns.

Distance can be set between one to four (presented by dashes/underscores) ... but each one of those is not a specific measurement. It changes based on speed.

What I can tell you is that, even if set at the closest distance at a normal highway speed, there is PLENTY of room for idiots to jump in between you and the vehicle in front of you. ACC isn't going to leave a single car length (or less) between the two vehicles @ 70 MPH, and clowns will most certainly jam in there.

I learned how to address this in my ’17 Raptor in the DC metro area traffic. When the traffic gets busy i usually take control back but if it’s not that bad and speeds are still good I’ll just keep my feet ready to act.

Resolution:
Move to an area where there is less human overpopulation.

Workaround:

Like Sammy Hagar said: “One foot on the brake, and one on the gas"

a light amount of throttle will tame the hard slowdown performed by Ford’s adaptive cruise, and you can either let the gap increase gradually or maintain the smaller gap at your discretion.

The struggle is real. When someone launches their beat up, M series peasant-mobile in front of My Rap it’s binary; either she keeps pace or if she’s too close it’s full on anchor drop. If i see it coming I put my foot on the gas and take up the slack to hold it off unless it’s a sea of red lights ahead.

Personal opinion here... This is a much-overlooked feature. In my past manual vehicles, the cruise control deactivated when I would hit the clutch pedal. This is NOT the case in the S650. I was messing around and to my surprise, down-shifting and up-shifting worked fine with the ACC.
