LOL. I hear ya. I remember the first time I had one filled and it DIDN'T make it look invisible. Then the tech educated me about chip repair.
First rock chip in my windshield in an extremely long time. That chip was on the far passenger side. Out of site, out of mind. Last chip, it started to crack, and insurance replaced the windshield because I caught it before it got bigger than a dollar bill.

This blows! I hate that I've got to look right through it. Replacement windshield is right at $700.00.

No reason to do the repair yourself unless your insurance doesn't cover chip repair at zero cost.

Call Safelite and let them do it. In fact, they're coming out to my work Monday to fill a small chip on my F150.
Been around long enough to know if I can do it myself, I do. I know i will do it correctly

My only recommendation, when you are filling the tube, go slow and have someone inside making sure it fills up the area. You will see what i mean
Scholar and gentleman you are. Unfortunately it won't make a difference. I'll figure out a way to screw it up. Goes without fail, hahahaha

Funny thing... the first rock chip I had filled, actually did almost vanish... every other one after that, not so much.

Here in AZ, because of all the granite rock landscaping (too hot/dry for grass), we have a lot of glass impacts. It's very common to add $0.00 windshield deductible option on Auto Insurance Comprehensive coverage.

So does Safelite -- it's guaranteed.

I do most everything myself so I know it's done right - have done so for the better part of ~40 years. But I've also learned that there are things you don't have to do yourself and the outcome is no different than if you had. Again, no sense in doing it when someone else will, at no additional cost, and with zero additional benefit.

I disagree. I can do it just as good if not better, on my time.

I fixed my chip yesterday, can still be seen, but It's at least smooth to the touch now. Still debating on replacing the windshield. My luck, I'll replace it and get a chip 2 day's after 😂

This is always a big one to me even for some stuff that would be warranty work. A lot of simple repairs, I can do myself in a fraction of the time that it would take me to drive to the nearest dealer, drop it off, uber back home, then uber back to the dealer in two or three days, do paperwork, endure a sales pitch for extra service that isn't needed right away and then drive back home again.

But I watched the Project Farm video that was posted and there's clearly a significant difference in the quality of the repair possible with the consumer grade kits vs the professional stuff. I will often buy professional tools but I don't think this is one that I want to get the $300 kit. My tool cabinets are busting at the seams as it is.

Having Safelite come out sounds like a good option, but then there's some animosity apparently with members who've had bad experiences with them installing new glass. I would NEVER have someone replace a windshield in the parking lot at the office. Having installed half a dozen windshields myself in the course of restoring classic cars, I've seen (and welded up) the ramifications of some of the shortcuts they take to do it so fast. Getting a new windshield may involve some of that same risk even if done at the dealer but maybe having one of their service trucks come out and do just the chip would be OK. They probably couldn't mess that up any worse than I could doing it myself for the first time with a consumer grade kit, could they? Then wait till I get a few more chips, or one in my line of sight, before risking a new windshield.

Thanks for all the replies. Good discussion.
