Car cost more overseas because of VAT (Value Added Tax) or whatever the country calls its version. And shipping costs and meeting the Euro regulations. The cost increases in the States have to deal with a woke government gone batty. I am buying a new V8 model because I fear the radicals abusing government power.
The Chinese are building weapons as fast as possible and abusing their power to force control of other nations. They have gained control of lithium so that they can dictate who gets it and at what price.
The EU is falling apart. France and Germany are in economic crisis because of immigration and Chinese competition. Russia and North Korea are scaring everyone with their Insanity. Once again the world is in chaos. Just as it has been so many times throughout history. I am too old to think I will outlast a long term crises and too young to deny myself the pleasure of a hot V8 engine.

The Chinese ... have gained control of lithium so that they can dictate who gets it and at what price.
The major thing China controls are rare-earth metals needed to build permanent magnets.

The United States has its own supply of lithium. Texas is gonna see a lot of money from semiconductor and battery production in the future. As you mentioned with trade concerns with China, companies want to on-shore critical tech, the pandemic showed them how easy it is for a chip to suddenly become 10x as expensive.

Agree about the rare earth metals, but there is excellent documentation showing how they have manipulated the lithium market to prevent competition. It is also the way they have taken over other resources. We have the resources, but have no government will to promote using those resources . The environmentalists use the courts to delay and roadblock efforts. Many people do not realize that we have a huge problem because it is almost impossible to build or expand oil refineries due to regulations. When one becomes worn out or too inefficient to operate, it may become shuttered.

In current era, smartphones are a massive deal. How a company can just pull the plug on a convenient charging pad - when they offered it already - is unreal.

after using a built in wireless charge pad for months, going back to a vehicle without it feels like like a major backward step.

sad.

Let us strive to keep statistics in line. Chile has over three times the lithium reserves than China. Add in Argentina, and it is closer to 6 times. Remember too, China doesn't care if they dig up their landscape, most other countries do.

Not until there is a substantial upgrade to the power generating infrastructure in Texas. During the summer peak, we’re already at 101% capacity. We keep inviting in businesses in major urban areas and importing libs from far flung coastal areas and not doing anything for the infrastructure. So don’t count on those semiconductor or batteries as soon as you may think.

We have a functional lithium mine in the States, but what good is it when only China will process the ore? It is a filthy process and until it becomes ecologically safe, it can never be done here. Tesla just opened the first processing plant in the U.S. on Saturday. The tide is changing, but it will take time and less NIMBY.

I had to pay just under $500 for a spare tire kit from Automotive Authority. Ford didn't have one to fit the Brembo brakes. My friend didn't get one either for his Challenger Scat Pack.

I will probably add this to the DH as well at some point.

Literally the week I got the spare, I holed the left rear Trofeo about 1 mile from my local stealership.
I aired up and limped her over to the shop and got it plugged while my Michelins were inbound.

It was definitely nice knowing I had a way home if I needed it.
