Hello everyone and Happy New Year! Hope 2024 will bring health and prosperity to all.
Being the gearheads that we are, we love numbers. Especially when it comes to the wheels, where the weight reduction matters the most. We didn't waste any time to pull off tires off a Dark Horse to get the exact weights of the OEM wheels.
We did a weight comparison to the OEM Dark Horse handing package wheels vs our
Project 6GR Ten spoke wheels in both 19" and 20" applications. We are very excited to share the numbers with the Mustang 7G community.
Here are the weights for each wheel set with tires removed.
19" OEM Dark Horse Handling Package wheels
Front 19x10.5 - 32.30 lbs. each
Rear 19x11.0 - 32.75 lbs. each
Project 6GR Ten Spoke 19" size
Front 19x11.0 - 24.30 lbs. each
Rear 19x11.5 - 22.85 lbs. each
Ford Mustang Dark Horse OEM wheels vs Project 6GR 19" weight saving
Front - 32.30 lbs.-24.30 lbs. = 8.0 LBS. each wheel
Rear - 32.75 lbs. -22.85 lbs. = 9.9 LBS. each wheel
35.80 pounds reduced on all four corners with 19x11/19x11.5 Project 6GR-10 wheels
Project 6GR Ten Spoke 20" size
Front 20x11 - 27.35 lbs.
Rear 20x11.5 - 26.15 lbs.
Ford Mustang Dark Horse OEM wheels vs Project 6GR 20" weight saving
Front - 32.30 lbs.-27.35 lbs. = 4.95 LBS. each wheel
Rear - 32.75 lbs. -26.15 lbs. = 6.6 LBS. each wheel
23.10 pounds reduced on all four corners with 20x11/20x11.5 Project 6GR-10 wheels
Reducing rotating mass where it matters the most plays a key part in any vehicles performance. Taking a page out of the Ford's handbook and world's 1st when they introduced a fully carbon fiber wheel on a full production vehicle, the Shelby GT350R. The weight savings from the carbon fiber GT350R vs GT350 cast aluminum was staggering. While the aluminum wheels came in around 33 lbs. each, the carbon fiber ones were only 18 lbs. each. Reducing 15 lbs. off of each corner made a big difference around the corners of the track.
Applying the same concept here, except not having to spend over $15k on wheels to be able to substantial reduce rotating mass off your wheels.
Ford Mustang Factory Dark Horse OEM 19x10.5 front & 19x11.0 rear
Project 6GR Ten Spoke 19x11 front & 19x11.5
Project 6GR Ten Spoke 20x11 front & 20x11.5 rear
Front 20x11 +24 305/30/20, Rear 20x11.5 +56 315/30/20 with Nitto NT555 G2 Tires.
