According to one internet site, the average speed on the Autobahn is 135 kPH or about 80 MPH.

Speaking only for myself, I won't drive over 80 MPH on the highway even in Texas where that limit is often ignored. It is a combination of alertness (sign of danger vs. reaction time), stopping distance (a big unknown variable), and the amount of traffic (unpredictable). Which means, obviously, I still believe speed kills! That is to say... Speed on brother, Hell ain't half full!

@Alan Applegate ..... agree with all of your points. great video too. That guy has ball$ ..... you are only young once but at that speed without a roll cage and personal safety gear he blows a tire - anything - and he is dead.

Average speed says it all, has become less in recent years, more like 125 km/h (78 mph) due to increasing traffic density, more trucks, etc.
However, it includes the densely populated Ruhr area with its permanent traffic jams as well as the empty routes with less traffic in the east of the country (Berlin is then more like the Ruhr area).

160 km/h (100 mph) is a relaxed cruising speed, 200 km/h (125 mph) is also no problem, but you more often have to brake because you run into slower traffic or speed limited streches (which means lower average speed 😉).
It's all a question of perspective, people here simply expect someone to come flying at 200 km/h or more, and almost everyone behaves accordingly (there are exceptions, of course, so you have to be very vigilant).
Most company cars (often Diesel or Hybrid) run out of breath at 220...230 km/h (135...140 mph), anything above that is probably considered very fast and more than you normaly see.

The roads here are also designed for high speed, where it is allowed. Starting with the crash barriers. You can clearly see the transition at the borders to countries with a general speed limit, where stable crash barriers are virtually non-existent (e.g. Netherlands/Germany). Of course here are still old stretches with less barriers.

Btw. S550 GT was also governored at 250 km/h (155 mph), the S550 Bullitt and Mach1 at 262 km/h (163 mph).

Here some examples from an ungovernored S550 Bullitt:

At least in Texas the majority seem to try and go the speed limit or reasonably above it. There are exceptions, but it’s at least a bit more reasonable than the vastly overcrowded US east coast.

well... last time I was on an a-bahn was ’11? or so. I was a bit surprised by the number of cell-yakkers, I’d thought that was a more American poor driving habit. I was driving Nuremberg to Frankfurt, travel was mostly brisk, but there were a surprising number of left lane turtles.
