As someone who works in this industry, you just summed it up in a way that makes total sense.

Your main driving script is extremely bloated but removal of anything is going to cause major issues elsewhere. It's no longer feasible to maintain and improve the original code; a modernization effort needs to be made with a greenfield project.

To parallel that with the S650, we need a new platform. It's a great car IMO, but it's seemingly reached its potential. Anything further, and the dynamics may break drastically.
But if you recall pre Covid we were supposed to get a new chassis. It never happened. With the new gen S650 I’m guessing we never will.

Bill Ford and Jim Farley were talking about mustang not that long ago, how it doesn't really have a limit, and they're considering multiple body styles. I wonder if that means a mid-engine mustang is something that's at least be considered in some meetings. There are a lot of parallels between the c7 and s650. Reaching the limit of front engine performance, needing to do something drastic to increase the car's appeal, a history of mid-engine concepts, etc.
Yeah the limit is it’ll die off like stated before. Already happened with other cars.

issue with Farley wanting the Mustang to be Ford’s ā€œ911ā€ is it comes at a price. New chassis, a lot of dedication to the platform. They just need to pick a direction.

As much as a mid engine Mustang would be awesome, it would complicate things if they wanted to bring back the Ford GT for example.

Well said. It’s ā€œnaturally heavyā€ bevause ford has been reusing the same old platform forever now. Adding this band-aid and that reinforcement and this extra feature, etc. gets heavier and heavier. Everything from the suspension to the frame to the welds to the bolts to the interior stuffing to the way its slabbed together, it’s all simply meant to be cheap / and quick to cobble together

It’s why Ford needs a modern, new mustang platform that can be modified to suit other cars. Not an suv platform that can accommodate a car. Not a crossover platform. A mustang specific platform that enables a light, tight mustang from the ground up. As such, it automatically benefits every other car they choose to build on the platform.

common sense used to rule the day. It’s been severely lacking in so many ways the last 5-10 years. And it seems Ford has been infected with the weirdness for a while. Hopefully we get some common sense car guys back in charge soon. No jaguar people, no political agenda people. Just making grrat mustangs, cars, trucks, etc. that people want and love.
That’s why they need to pick a direction finally. I’m glad @Q6543 came with some good news as it shows something truly exciting is on the horizon, but for the future it’s about time they made a move.

Imagine a new chassis being turned into a 2nd gen GTD. That car would be pretty crazy. The current GTD is a heavy boy but it’s still a monster.

I think that’s where we are so bummed.
Yes, it was ā€œsupposed to beā€ a race car that got modified to be street legal. That was the marketing jive.

in reality, we have learned it’s just a regular mustang with gt500 drivetrain and a multimatic suspension bolted on. Oh. And a body kit. Seriously.

in other words the s650 version of the old gt500 plus the old cameo z28 suspension. But around $300k more expensive for some reason.

man, I really wanted to believe ford and multimatic’s words. But they’re lies. That’s what burns. If they really did take the race car and add some internal bumpers, etc. for street legal standards, it would be a heck of a lot lighter snd would have smoked tje gt3rs like nothing. Instead, the one car it was created to beat…pretty much laughs at it while passing it at the track. Come on man. That’s just wrong.

I can’t remember where, but someone did a deep dive on the car and why even the multimatic suspension wasn’t going to be all that bevause of the s650 mounting positions. The regular old GT mounting positions. No race car chassis with its own geometry. Just an s659 with multimatic bouncy parts.

hence the serious level of disappointment.
Meanwhile, we are watching our brothers on the other side of the aisle being rewarded with the most amazing car to ever come out of the USA - with what appears to be an even more impressive model to be revealed shortly after.

just when it looked like the most amazing time to be a mustang guy, we get red-pilled. The Gtd isn’t a race car. It’s an s650 from drivetrain to frame to interior, etc. just with a body kit and some suspension upgrades. Should have just been the regular gt500 and cost 110k.
The GTD wasn’t built for you. It was built for a purpose… Nurburgring and for people that can appreciate that and afford it.

If you are that broken up over it and Mustang in general then you don’t know what it means to be Mustang and you never were a fanboy.

The GTD is bad ass, period.

It would be hard to see them doing a whole new platform when they are only selling 40,000 a year, and if that goes down to 30,000....

They'd have to make a $70k base car like the Corvette

but thrn again, it BECAUSE we don’t have a new platform that the sales are down.

if they continue doing the same old stuff, they’re killing it. Definition of insanity and all that.

build it right and they will come. Personally I have been itching to buy a new mustang. But none of the models are compelling for me yet.

a new platform opens big possibilities. An old one just means cars that are heavier than they should be snd soak up the engine performance thst should be translating to the road.

as I said before, the new platform also open opportunities for a resurgence of efficient CARS.

LOL. OK Brie Larsen.

it clearly wasn’t built for msny people since:

1. it’s slower than the car it was built to beat.
2. it’s incredibly expensive.
3. it’s slower than a corvette thst costs half as much.
4. there is no Nürburgring in America, so not msny will be making the trip.

it failed at its mission.

I know Ford tried to downgrade the mission with the ā€œsub-7ā€ hype, but that wasn’t the goal. The goal was ā€œbeat the gt3rs.ā€

did it do that? Not by a long shot.

so it’s whole purpose for existing … doesn’t exist.

you may not care because you aren’t a fan. But those of us who’ve bought our mustangs over the years and preferred them to everything else do. We expect ford to at least honor their word. And we hope they aim even higher than that.

so when we are disappointed, it’s like the chiefs losing the Super Bowl. It’s the big game and you crapped the bed. So true fans get deeply disappointed over things like that. The zr1 is the Eagles in this matchup.

look, the GTD is a rad car. It’s fast, handles well, and looks great. But it’s not some massive leap. It’s just a 2020 gt500 with a body kit and suspension upgrade.

in reality it should have just been the gt500 for 100k.

there’s no reason to have it so expensive. The car is a known quantity. The drivetrain is a known quantity. The body doesn’t need to be carbon fiber. And the suspension can be added by anybody willing to work with multimatic I.e. 2015 Camaro z28).

so yes it’s a rad car. But it’s not $3-400k rad.
And it’s certainly not what ford hyped it up to be.

it would have been a great gt500 update.

The thing that concerns me a little is the fact that the next iteration is coming pre-refresh. Does Ford intend to refresh the S650, and to what extent? Other automotive news has brought to light that the V8 "is no longer a bad word" around Stellantis offices, and it sounds like a V8 Charger is all but confirmed. Since the new Hurricane engine is pushing 550, I'd think it would be a reasonable assumption to say the next V8 to go into the new Charger is going to at least match that. A very strong update to the S650 is going to be needed to top that.

I am intrigued by the idea of a new performance engine being developed - but I digress; I'm going off-topic. My point is, whatever is coming is going to need to overwrite the GTD's weak points. That's not going to be an easy pair of shoes to wear given the magnitude of what the GTD is.

That new V8 charger is going to weigh close to 5000 lbs so it better make some power lol I think the hurricane charger weighs 4800 lbs.

True, though a high-horsepower number is what will sell, and that is the end goal in order to keep this car alive for hopefully another decade at least.

Aren't most of the "pony/Muscle-that try to be sports" style cars really heavy? M3, M4, Camaro, Challenger, {a few more on the list}... those are ~4Klb cars. No reason to think the GTD would be a featherweigh, that is a job for the Ford GT.

While I get what you are all saying about a $300K "Mustang" it is still a "Mustang" and I am glad it is a heavy pig!

Sounds good, is fast, holds its own against a lot of also really fast cars.

Good points, that’s the interesting thing about the S650 currently, it’s kind of in its SN95 phase of the platform in a way. Farley hinted at losing weight being something important for performance reasons in the future but who knows.

Yeah I don’t think Ford is too concerned about the Charger, it’s just huge. Lol

I saw one next to a Mustang recently and the size difference is almost a throwback to a 68 Mustang/Charger as far as length and wheelbase. Charger size wise is probably what a modern ā€œmuscle carā€ would be… makes the Mustang a pony again šŸ˜‚

The 2005 Mustang GT had a curb weight of 3,450lbs. Imagine being that light!

A10 trans is no lightweight, the IRS is heavy, but it's still only 3,740lbs for the base 2025 GT

4100-4300lbs is just nuts
