Here is what the law says in Virginia...

Virginia Car Tint Laws
  • Front Side Windows: Must allow more than 50% of light in.
  • Back Side Windows: Must allow more than 35% of light in.
  • Rear Window: Must allow more than 35% of light in.
  • Windshield: tinting allowed to the top of the manufacturer's AS-1 line (5 or 6 inches from the top).
Most tinting places will allow you to put whatever you want on your car, but if you do, be prepared to accept the consequences of not following the law. You either follow it or if the police catch you, they will tell you to remove it.
Virginia: Usurping our freedom since 1607.

Seriously, Viriginia has some puritanical laws, especially re: traffic code. You can go to jail for 21+mph over the speed limit. To which some here will hue and cry : "You shouldn't ever be going that FAST"

only VA is one of those states that had to be dragged kicking and screaming out of the 55mph speed limit and even where you see anything over 55, it's notoriously under posted. Go to other states and witness the same road conditions posted 10-15mph higher.

My point is this: Virginia is a pretty unfriendly to motorists state - pretty much the the whole DMV is.

I didn't have tint on anything until I got to Texas. That's softened my position on tint for sure :-) I do understand not drawing unwanted attention, but I also don't like getting into a car with an ambient temp of 145F.

Nobody asked about laws. We can look those up. šŸ˜‰

50% front
35% driver & passenger
5% rear quarters and back window

Here is something to consider. Maybe your local law enforcement doesn't care, but lawyers do. Get into an accident, either your fault or theirs, with 55% on your windshield and any good lawyer will make mincemeat out of you. It's a gamble and certainly your choice to do or not do.
Got a cite for a single case where this actually happened?

I had it happen to a friend many years ago. The lawyers went after him for dark windows, loud exhaust and big tires. Said he was racing, couldn’t hear and couldn’t see. The accident was not his fault but he still lost his claim. Is it likely? Probably not, but is it possible? Definitely!

The 55% drops the glare significantly over the 70. I love this set up I have now, my other Mustang was the exact same except the windshield was 70. Moving forward mine will all be 55/15/5. Its my fav of all the combos I’ve had.
Which part is 5? Rear windshield or triangle sides?

70% front windshield, 55% back windshield (convertible so it's small), 25% side windows but shop guy says his gun reads 17% due to the slight tint from factory.
I did the front and back windshields separate and to be honest I'm not happy with it because it's not dark enough.
I want to go 15% all around with a 55% front windshield.
But since I'd have to pay to redo it to really get my money's worth I feel like I should do 5% all around with a 25- 35% front windshield.
I know that sounds aggressive but when I look out of my side windows at night that are 25% or 17% if you include his readings d/t installed factory tint I can see fine, and the front will also have the added benefit of the high intensity headlights.
What do you guys think would be good for a 2024 race red convertible performance
I had 5 % on side glass, 70 front and 50 rear. I'm happy with it. 24 vert Oxford white. I am a LEO, if stopped I'll roll all glass down for officer to see there is no threat.

I had to do a quick search.. :inspect: sorry kinda off topic.

Chances for a car accident increase when a driver’s view is obscured. Window tinting certainly is a reason for poor visibility and is often overlooked as a car accident cause. If you or a loved one had been involved in a car accident because of window tinting or other negligent reasons, contact the Atlantic City car accident lawyers at the D’Amato Law Firm immediately. Our knowledgeable lawyers will get the help you need and the compensation you rightfully deserve.

:puke: I don't like it , but I figured there were some out there.. .

Most of the window tint laws in this country are nonsensical. In my state SUVs, minivans, etc., can run around with 15%-25% on their side and rear glass, but you can't go darker than 35% on the sides and rear for a car. It really makes no sense. If you wanted to hide drugs/people/guns from the cops behind dark tint, it's a hell of a lot easier to have 4 guys with shotguns in the back of a Suburban than a Mustang.

Of course, enforcement varies state by state. When I lived in Tennessee, I had 15% on the sides and 5% on the rear and I thought it was perfect. The police didn't care and they didn't check during state inspections. Where I live now it's part of the state inspection and they'll fail you for anything darker than 35% (unless of course, you find an inspection station of questionable repute). I was also pulled over for illegal tint here and it's a fix-it ticket, so it's just not worth going darker than legal here, which sucks because 35% isn't nearly dark enough, IMO.

Congratulations... you know the law. šŸ™„
My post was more to show that I'm following Virginia law as I live in Virginia and I was showing what the tint levels are for my state.
Geez... some people getting their panties in a wad over laws... šŸ™„

In compliance with state laws. Some states fine pretty heavy for these violations.
Careful now about quoting "Laws".... some people get their panties in a wad over that.... šŸ™„

FYI that window tint from factory isn’t really tint film, it’s a dye in the glass. And FWIW, it’s equal to ~20% film. Thought I’d mention it since you mentioned minivan tints.

I think, in general, we enthusiasts have issues with laws that prevent us from enjoying our hobby. Sometimes we just need to understand that we are the minority. Like it or not the laws exist. Any who knowingly breaks them does so at their own risk.

That said some laws are absolutely necessary. I put window tint in that category. Regardless of what anyone says super dark tint reduces visibility, especially at night. That’s dangerous. Fine if you drive on roads by yourself. Not so much when others are on the road. You are literally putting others in possibly danger. That’s not cool.
