If you can't find a HUD that includes gear indication, you could get a Banks iDash and mount it wherever you want with a suction cup mount. It's definitely not a cheap option, but I'm sure you could have it display speed and current gear.

Banks iDash SuperGauge & DataMonster (52mm Gauge) (bankspower.com)

Single/Dual Gauge Pod Suction Mounts for iDash and 52mm (2-1/16 in) gauges [63341 63344] – Banks (bankspower.com)
That would definitely do the trick, thank you!

I'm curious if you've used a HUD before? You still have to change your focal point to the windshield projection like you would to the dash. I personally find it more distracting and stressful on my eyes than shifting my focus to the dash. To each their own.
Shift of focus is quicker than shift of position. The huds i’ve used (not in the mustang) project the information so it appears to float in the air in a position just around the halfway point of the engine bay (hood) - directly below the line of sight. A factory full color hud with forward lower proximity monitor / alert / distance marker would be greatly appreciated.

That would still require me to look down, that's why I want an aftermarket HUD
With all due respect, if someone can't look down at the speedo while driving to see what gear they are in without crashing their car, they probably shouldn't be driving any type of performance vehicle. Or any vehicle for that matter.

Yup. Had HUD in my '16 Corvette Z06. Still had to shift focus, no different than looking down at the speedo.

And make sure the cost of the Mustang doesn't go up one nickel, too, right?

I guess decades of aviation is wrong. All of those pilots who have and use huds shouldn’t be flying. They should just quick scan their instruments like pilots of old and basic civil aviation. We should just strip them out of all modern airliners and military aircraft.

Here is the thing, HUDs are nice, and are objectively safer and better for your operation of the vehicle. Even substandard HUDs that are not focused to infinity in your sight line are better because the shift in focus while still keeping the road in sight line still gives , albeit blurry, traffic and movement information to your brain that is missing when you go completely eyes in.

Eh, the problem there is not all HUDs are created equal. Airbus isn't getting the HUD for their A350 off Alibaba. Now Boeing, on the other hand...

Fighter jets? The helmet-integrated HUD in the F-35 costs more than a Mustang GTD. They use micro-OLED displays, which themselves were an expensive upgrade after the original LCD display had too much backlight glow (hampered pilot's night vision).

Cars != jets

I had HUD in my '16 Corvette Z06. Was barely more than a gimmick, IMHO.

THIS!

I sometimes find myself turning off the a/c, downing the radio, rolling down the windows and just enjoying the included soundtrack. the gauges are fine and provide plenty of viewable info, including a shift indicator that’s pretty hard to miss.

I loved the HUD on my C7 Corvette, and would have gladly paid for that option on my S650.

That being said, I would not even think of messing with aftermarket HUDs. Nothing can match oem in that field unless you're prepared to replace the windshield for one that supports it.
And since the Mustang doesn't have HUD, you're likely never going to find one...
So it would always look "iffy at best"...

And the hud in my wife’s 2500 Denali is perfectly in the sight line and focused properly. Thing is very well done and reduces eyes in time significantly.

Cars are statistically and factually more dangerous than planes too. In my entire flight training (which was only 40 hours btw for private pilot) I had zero close calls or mishaps. I have at least one a week in my car where I have to take measures to not collide with a stupid driver

The more you can do to keep the driver’s eyes on the road the safer it is.

so you are talking about helmet mounted cueing which is like VR in the visor and was designed for high off boresight weapons.

Now back to the discussion, the response was about the decision to deride OP because he wants a HUD.

I want a HUD, but have not seen anything remotely quality or well designed outside of GM’s 22-24 huds.
