As some of you may know, the MT-82 D4 transmission has a counterweight on the side. Ever since installing my MGW shifter, I have an intermittent rattle when engine braking or at high rpm’s that I can stop by putting my hand on the shift knob. It sounds similar to this video but not anywhere close to being as bad. I contacted MGW, thinking something may be wrong with the shifter, and they said it may be from this counterweight. Since the MGW is transmission mounted, it may just have made it more noticeable than with the stock shifter.

The sound that it makes is very hollow and similar to the noise that I’m making it make in the video so this leads me to believe that this may be the issue. I saw that calimer sells a complete delete plate here.

Frankly, I cannot find much about this online. Does anyone have any input on whether doing this would be a good idea?

Can you post a video of the sound in your actual car while running (when the sound is happening)? It may also be better to remove the center console and sound deadening to see if you can isolate the sound better. It could be the weight rattling or something else.

The sound is very intermittent so it would be hard to catch but I can try. Like I said it sounds exactly like the linked YouTube video just not nearly as bad. May just buy the block off plate from calimer and see what happens.

Yeah, that video sounds pretty rough, lol.

Makes me wonder if your counterweight is about to fail and should/could be repaired or replaced. Any thought about having Ford dealer tech look at. I have my doubts that it’s a common problem and therefore dealer techs would not know. Might be worth contacting Callimer as they probably have way more experience with what a counterweight failure looks like before committing to replacing with the delete kit.

If I can get my 6 speed back up in the air to get other data point on what another shows. I don’t think I can get to it while the car is on the ground.

I have no confidence in my local dealer. I’d be interested to see if yours or any others have a similar amount of play. It seemed excessive to say the least.
