The question is, how long does the belt last?

About as long as an accessory (A/C, alternator, etc.) belt does: a general service life of 50-100K miles, 80-160K kms. A lot will depend on the driver and environment. Someone who does primarily highway driving, not much effort is needed to turn the linear screw, pictured above. Someone in-town, needing a lot of turn in brief distances, like parallel parking on a regular basis, theirs would wear out much faster.

Each person would have their own comfort level of when to replace. I feel once you've crossed 50,000 miles, it's probably a good idea to change it, no matter how well it looks. Cheap insurance, versus a belt popping at an inopportune moment and being a drag on the rest of your schedule. Like batteries: we know the battery is going to fail, with a general lifespan. It's better to lean forward and replace when you have the time, versus coming out to a unlit parking lot and finding the vehicle is dead.

I guess I should be happy, or at least contented! It could be a Nissan-made slip joint (like the one in their CVT) or one built like the oil/balance shaft in a 2.7L Eco-Boost. When it fails, it will always be in the most inappropriate time and place. Mr. Murphy is still alive and well!
