I’m looking for some insight from those with more wheel/tire experience than me. I bought some new Steeda Trident wheels and Continental EC Force tires for track use this year. I had the tires mounted by Steeda a few months back, but never installed the wheels and tires on the car. This evening I went to test fit the wheels and tires, and one tire was completely flat. I found the back side bead was leaking. What would cause it to leak from the bead on a brand new tire and wheel? Most of the results online say a leaking tire from the bead is from a bad seal due to corrosion, which of course is not the case here. Any other thoughts on what would cause this?

It could be just a bad seat when it was mounted. Trash or debris in the seat area. I would start off with having the tire remounted and balanced to rule this out. Removing the tire and remounting would allow for inspection of the seat area on both the tire and wheel. If nothing seems off by a visual inspection remount and balance. Check it every so often before use/install on the car to be sure all is well. Since this is a track set seems like this would be doable.

Thank you for the feedback. I’m taking it to Steeda tomorrow to have them check it out. We’ll see what they find.

Agree. Had similar issue with Hoosier race tires. New set, one was not retaining air. Took to vendor at race track, he said it happens, removed tire and remounted, all good. Sometimes bead doesn't set right.

I had a freak off road incident where I lodged a very large wood splinter into the bead of my truck’s tire, flattening it. All I had to do was get the ginormous, spear tip sized splinter out by dismounting the tire and remounting it.

That’s worth a shot.
confirm balance when you remount if you go this route.

I had a set of MT drag radials that had a lot of mold flashing along the bead. Had to trim it off with a knife to get a good seal... check that there is not a lot of flashing there.

What ended up being the issue?
I’m not exactly sure. They told me the wheel was ready to pick up, and when I got there I couldn’t find anyone in the shop, but my wheel was sitting there so I just grabbed it and left. I’m assuming it just didn’t get seated well as I can’t imagine any debris having been on the tire or wheel since they were brand new.

Debris could be anything. Excess rubber on tire from mold in seat area, trash or debris in tire mount lube or application brush. Really hard to say with certainty. I doubt Steeda knows for sure.

Glad you got it fixed.

Update: Still leaking. It was at 37psi when I got home Friday, and today it’s at 27psi. Leaking from the rear bead again. So…back we go.

I'd ask to see the wheel bead area and tire bead area while they are apart. See if the wheel has imperfections like surface porosity in that area.
