For those who care, just weighed the front OE wheel on my DH with the supplied Pirelli 305. 56.4lbs.

APEX VS5-RS with 305 Goodyear Supercar 3R - 47.4lbs.

9 Pound difference!! Enormous gain in unsprung weight.

Yea it seems like an OEM wheel is around 30lbs and a light aftermarket is around 20

@ISLAND DARK HORSE ..... you are 100% correct. Discussed this a few years ago with a tech I know at Kal Tire. He said it depended on what you were going to use the car for. It was his opinion that all manufacturers had their own play book on what went into rim specs. He said a big part of the oem thinking was the ability of the rims to withstand "daily driving" which he defined as crap roads and pot holes. He said he had a lot of light weight rims for track, stiffer rims for drag, stiffer yet for rally but for daily drivers he said some of the lightweights would be out of true and line in a couple of weeks.

IDK... I’ve campaigned lightweight wheels in DC metro for ... probably 8+ years on cars, 4 years on mg. (Ducati) wheels and 8+ years on a pair of carbon fiber wheels on my ZX10r. I’ve smacked quite a few bumps, pavement ripples, pot holes & even hit objects in the road with them and not had issues with the wheels being out of round, or bent.

Ironically, the only wheel I’ve broken was in San Antonio, which has objectively better pavement than the DC metro area by at least a factor of 5, but I managed to find a wheel and tire swallowing pot hole in a construction zone in my wife’s Lincoln to the tune of about $500. Did not lose the tire or bead, but the wheel was shagged.

Obviously, if you go 20’s or larger wheel and lower profile than stock, you’re giving up some potential shock absorption on impact and if your tire pressure is low, again, you risk harming the rim rather than letting the tire take most of the hit. But my experience aside from that one issue is that the aftermarket, quality rims can be streetable and survive.

Now... in and around Detroit? Fuhgeddaboutit.
