I was giving my car a spring wax today and noticed a couple rock chips on the area in front of the rear tires. I see that CJ pony parts has PPF specifically cut for this area.

Is it alright to put PPF over rock chips? Years later when it's time to remove it, will the PPF try to take the paint with it from the rock chip edge?

After doing the front clip I saw this as a problem area early on and did PPF there as well as the A pillars and 16 inches on leading edge of the roof. If when you remove your PPF use plenty of removal solution with proper angle you should be OK. Steam can also help but watch the level of heat.

It’s totally fine to PPF over rock chips. Sometimes it does make them appear more noticeable because you’re essentially placing a glossy clear film on top.

As someone stated above, you can do touch up before putting on the PPF but it has to cure first. You can also put touch up paint on top of the PPF.

I work at a shop that does PPF and I have a full satin PPF on my S650 so I’ve seen a bunch lol

How long is needed to let touch up paint cure before applying the PPF?

Will the PPF application solution try to rehydrate and wash away the paint if no clearcoat is added over it?

About a day should be fine, as long as it’s in an environment that allows it to cure properly.

Once it dries, there should be no issue with the paint washing away. The solution used for slip is basically soap and the tack solution is usually diluted alcohol.

Thank you for the info. I ordered the anchor room precut PPF from CJ Pony Parts for this area. I'll do the touch up paint, then install the pieces the next day. Won't worry about the clear coat cause the PPF will be there.

You’re welcome, let me know how it goes. The good thing about it is you can’t really mess it up I’d say. Plenty of videos on YouTube that can help you as well. Good luck!

Last question. I found these spots because I just got done doing a paste waxing. Do I need to strip off the wax in the area to use the touch up paint and/or apply the PPF?

If so, what method is best to locally remove the wax?

Morning,

When I got the car transported to PPF they identified marks on the left fender (possibly a chain?), but it was also some of the first DH's in Australia, and were a little hesitant to try and paint match the Blue Ember - after many discussions and photo's, it was PPF'd over and to be honest, you would notice if was not pointed out - even to the point that there is no real difference on the surface of the PPF at the point of the marks - threw in some before and after photo's

Prior to PPF - 4 knotches in line possibly for link of chain

After PPF - nothing were done to chips prior to PPF being applied over top

Even zoomed in, it is not noticble - I can pick it and depending on angle of light easier sometimes, but it is not an issue to go over chips - would most likely be a benefit to seal off from atmosphere and stop any further deterioration.

I’m not 100% sure on this. I can check with one of the intstallers and get back to you if it’s not too late. I do know that ideally you don’t want any wax or sealant on the surface to ensure it tacks properly.

I haven't done the work yet and wont until it warms up a bit as I have read that applying PPF in higher ambient temps is better.
