Reference 2024 GT with performance package with 6,000 on the vehicle:

My wife was in a rear end collision, which was her fault. She was entering a roundabout and was scanning the traffic entering the roundabout when the vehicle in front of her slammed on her brakes. The lady indicated she likely had time to enter the roundabout but decided to slam on her brakes. At any rate, when my wife looked back from scanning for traffic, the vehicle ahead was stopped and she ran into the rear of the vehicle. Our vehicle has a camera, which recorded the accident. The GPS on the camera indicated our vehicle impacted the other vehicle at 25 mph.

My question to those with knowledge of the Pre-Collision Assist/Automatic Emergency Braking/Air Bags systems. Should the systems have been deployed?

Our vehicle alerts did not go off nor did the automatic emergency braking activate. Also no air bags were deployed.

The systems are hit or miss i wouldn't trust them. They also completely disable if you're in track mode

I was fortunate enough to have attended the Ford Performance Racing School in Charlotte, NC driving Dark Horse GT's around the Roval. We tested the pre-collision braking system at up to 25 mph and it worked each of the 4 times I tried. The key is it only engages if there is no input to the brakes or steering by the driver. If it detects the driver is engaged it does not step in.

That was about to be my comment, if you're already on the brakes for the roundabout it will assume you're awake and in control and will not intervene.

Also looking at the vid, the vehicle ahead is not directly in front until the last few moments. The systems tend to have quite a narrow field of view when travelling above a set speed as to not trigger by events in other lanes

That is pretty bad not sure how your wife missed the brake lights on the whole time and the driver in front of her slowing down, did not look like she slammed on her brakes. Anyway did the pre collision alert start to flash red and beep on the dash screen? Mine will do that if I am coming up fast on someone when I am getting over to pass them.

Thanks for the info. Seems reasonable although it does not indicated that in the manual

NO Pre collision alerts activated. I have had the pre collision alerts work in the past tho. As indicated she was scanning the roundabout for traffic and when she looked back it was too late. I think the lady in front had her brakes slightly applied to slow her speed to enter the roundabout but decided she did not have time to continue so she hit her brakes hard which she did admit too. Still not her fault my wife could have been more alert to the situation. Just trying to understand why the system did not work

The part about steering is in my manual, under precautions and limitations of the system.
Above a certain speed it only looks directly in front of the vehicle, below that speed it will look out for an be able to react to things crossing your path (vehicles pulling out, people walking into the road etc etc) It also has a minimum speed (5mph) below that it does nothing so you can park etc.

There is a top gear episode where clarkson tries to run hammond over but the auto braking doesn't allow it. Then he does a sharp turn into his car and they crash and he somehow seems surprised by it.

I have read about the steering and how the brakes pre set in anticipation of a crash. Just don’t understand why the auto braking did not function. I don’t rely on all the safety Nannie’s just expected the system to work differently
