Tire shop installed my staggered rims wrong

So I recently had my summer tires changed over onto the factory rims. I did specify to the tire shop that the rear rims are wider than the fronts and to fit the 275 profile tires to the wider rims in the rear.

I noticed the car seems to pull left to right over the crown of the road pretty good like I've never felt before, and there have been some minor intermittent scraping noises coming from the driver side front wheel.

Upon further inspection with a tape measure lo and behold they managed to goof it up despite my specific instructions on how to install. They got the 255 tires up front and the 275s in the rear right but I don't think they were paying attention to the rims at all! Both of the 9.5 wide rims are on the driver's front and rear and both the 9 inch rims are on the passenger side.

My question is how serious of an issue is this going to be? I'm going to wake up early tomorrow and head back to the tire shop and see if they can fix this before I have to go to work but I can't believe the fitment of the rear rims are so different that they don't fit properly on the front and scrape???

How serious is it given that you already have plans to fix it immediately? Not really so serious, except the fact that your service folks are incompetent. If they were scraping, you'd hear it.

I have a Fusion with the front driver's side omnidirectional tire mounted the wrong way and drives surprisingly well (don't do that).

Sadly seems to be a theme building these days. Everyone it seems is just okay not knowing how to do their damn job properly. I could hear the idiot moving the car in and out of the shop revving my engine like an idiot too. He's lucky it was warm still gonna tear a strip off of them for that too. What's extra scary is this was supposed to be a higher end establishment. Can't imagine what sort of shenanigans happen in the "discount" shops.

Next time go to Discount Tire. Kinda embarrassing they installed them backwards.

Discount Tire doesn't exist here. For those wondering this was at a Kal Tire. They used to be my go to, but recently it seems they've let their standards slide massively. Figured it wouldn't be as bad since I moved to a new city but nope.

And they aren't even backwards, the wide rims are on the driver side and the narrow rims are on the passenger side 🤦which means one tire is stretched onto too wide of a rim and one is on too narrow of a rim. That just takes skill.

Not a professional job but your tires aren't going to be damaged by the wider wheel. Get it changed and you're all good.

Dear sweet baby Jesus. Tire monkeys are the worst. 🤦‍♂️

Get it fixed and you'll be fine.

Check the tire, wheel and strut on the front corner where they mounted the 9.5 inch wheel. With the 9.5 wheel and 255 tire, the backspacing is roughly 182mm (backspacing of the tire, not just the wheel). The front tires/wheels have 174.5mm backspacing when mounted on the 9.0 inch wheel so the rear tires extend 7.5mm further toward the strut than the OE front wheels.

I have 19x11 +53 with 295 wide tires on my car, and a 28mm spacer up front. That is roughly 178.5mm backspacing, and I have about 6mm of space between the tire and strut. That equates to somewhere around 184.5mm of backspacing clearance before rubbing. You’re 2.5mm less than that, and my clearance measurement of 6mm could be of a couple mm either way as I was just verifying no rubbing with my setup. The pulling could be explained by the tire contacting the strut slightly, but more likely is just the mismatch wheel setup as the 255 mounted on the 9.5 is going to have a different contact patch than the one mounted on the 9.0 wheel.

The front mounted on the rear as well as the tires mounted on incorrect wheels is no big deal, just get them to fix it, but definitely check out that 9.5 wheel mounted up front before they remount it and say it is fine just to confirm it was not contacting the strut.

This is why I watch my vehicles like a hawk when being serviced, even at the dealer. The only thing I have done away from dealer is the free tire rotation and balance on truck done at TD, everything else is done at dealer, including mustang, as I've done biz with them for over 30 years and they take good care of my vehicles.

In case you haven’t read enough to convince you, see what happens when you let a tire shop work on your vehicle unsupervised:

#14 This guy had something like 9 sheared lug nuts due to the tire shop ignoring his instructions to NOT use an impact wrench. This caused lug nut, stud and can possibly cause rotor hat damage.

“But we have torque sticks” - Right, that stay in the tool box because the tire tech is in too much of a hurry to be bothered, so the impact wrench is either on full reverse, or full forward.

Just to add on here - you can visually check each tire before you leave.

I personally would mark the wheels and tires with a grease pen or chaulk to make sure they know which one goes where when you go back.

As someone pointed out, the off-set on a rear rim mounted up front could cause rubbing issues. Make sure you inspect the wheel and components when they make the correction. Any damage is on them to fix.

Some how I thought that the rims were the same sizes, just the tires were different sizes. Someone check me on this. I just bought a used set of wheels off a 2020 PP car and they're all the same, I'll re measure today to confirm.

Yeah the GT Performance Pack and DH rim sizes are a half in wider in the back for a staggered set up. The GT premiums are a square set up (all 4 are the same width).
