just tried to press m 5a460 bearing into the knuckle on my 2024 dh and the knuckle cracked. i did this on my 2015 s550 without a problem. any insights into why this happened?

Oh no, perhaps it got a bit cocked in there... or a bad casting. There was a recall for rear knuckles on some cars... mine included, but mine were OK (not on the list of bad knuckle serial numbers). Check the serial numbers anyway... maybe they need to expand the recall. I also did those bearings on my car, and was a bit wary of that as the first side came out without too much effort (once I got the right parts for my press), but the second side was a real pain to get out and back in. Check those serial numbers here (if you haven't already).

i figured out my mistake here. as usual, poor prep and sloppiness are to blame. having remembered this job to be easy the last time, i skipped some steps. this time i put the bearing in the freezer, heated the knuckle with a heat gun, put gear oil on bearing surface and unbolted the knuckle from the lca so i could get the press exactly perpendicular. with this, it is surprising how easily the bearing presses in. but you have to be exactly perpendicular. the bearing will not ‘find’ its own way through. this was a $500 mistake i hope no one else here makes.
