I have a friend who works assembling transmissions for Ford, and is a final assembly tech for the 10 speeds. He said the drums he's been seeing since mid last year are the updated ones we are getting as service parts. They are all aluminum, but the new ones are black where the earlier ones were all silver. My speculation is that they are hardened in some way, but that is only a guess. He does not know either, as the drums are assembled when they get to him for final assembly.

I would recommend having your transmission checked. That's what warranty is for. I love everything about this car except the A10(exceptwhen it works right). I have a bad leg from motorcycle accident ( killed my Hayabusa), so the manual isn't an option for me.
No issues were logged in the system and a visual inspection looks perfectly normal from under the car. Not directly related, I recently took it in for disappearing coolant. After a day of testing by the dealership, included extended pressurized testing, nothing showed abnormal. Taking it to a Track Night on Wednesday so we’ll see how it goes

Good info! The black outer shell is the updated one, as it is anodized. The verdict is still out on those. I'm guessing a few older cdf drums have slipped thru and made their way into the 24's...... I'll have to ask the tech replacing my transmission.....

My GT did that a few months back when applying throttle from a stop. >0.5 sec delay from input then massive over revving followed by lurching then earth quake-like trans engagement with a shuddering drop in rpm to the point it nearly caused my car to stall out while making a left turn across traffic. It felt like a 15 yr old trying to drive a manual for the first time 😅😖
The scenario you described is identical to yours except I was going straight.

Talked to the dealer and they said unless it can be duplicated not much they can do at the moment.

I've had a two instances now of strange transmission behavior with my 10 speed so I'll be keeping an eye on it. It's a 24GT that I ordered and took delivery on April 9th and it was build at the end of March beginning of April.

I'm curious about your disappearing coolant situation. Since day one when I took delivery my coolant was at the min mark in the reservoir until the weather got colder here in Michigan and I noticed the level dropped quite a bit below the min level. I had the oil changed and they put coolant in which it brought it up I think just below the midway point of the min/max reservoir.

Within a day the level had dropped again back below the minimum level but I have no idea what happened to the coolant. No weird coolant smells or other evidence of it going anywhere. I was told it can be normal for it to happen during the change in weather but I've never noticed it other vehicles I've owned.

Here is a link to a thread I started about my issues which shows a few pics of my coolant levels, etc:

Probably had some air in cooling system. I'd keep an eye on it tho

Honestly surprised to hear so many having issues with the 10 speed. I’ve had mine since Oct 2023 and am approaching 19000 miles. I feel like I beat the absolute crap out of the transmission and it performs extraordinarily well.
In normal mode, it’s the smoothest shifting car I’ve ever owned. If you get the throttle right, the car will accelerate and smoothly shift gears without feeling anything.
‘A click over to Sport mode and the shifts are lightning quick with minimal lag, keeping the Coyote right where it wants to be. Even manual shifts are near instant with the paddles.

I guess it makes sense that with any other mass manufactured part, that there will be good ones and bad ones; likely far on either end of the spectrum.
Sorry to everyone having issues (isn’t that exactly what buying new and having a warranty is for?) but the 10R80 is probably my favorite part of the car.

I agree. I created a thread probably a year ago basically saying the same thing. I love the 10R80 in my 24 GT. I have started tracking it, and it is really impressive how well it does on the track as well. The 10 speed in my 2019 GT was pretty good, but this one is great. As you said, with anything mass produced there will be good and bad ones. Time will tell if mine holds up, but so far I am loving it. I hate to hear some people are having trouble with theirs.

2nd issue this morning with the 10R80 in a week. Pulling out into traffic in a right hand turn when it decided it wasn't going to go anywhere. RPM's climbed and then it let go scared the crap out of me with all the traffic. Called the Ford service manager and she is now going to look into it but I'm not expecting much.

After my 22 gt premium was bought back by Ford for transmission failure, I bought a 24. 9k miles in and the transmission is doing the exact same thing as the 22. I guess Ford didn't see a need in addressing the issue. It appears to be a bushing in the CDF DRUM, probably a $3 part. WTF Ford? Anyone else having these issues? Clunking into gear, harsh shifting up and down, slipping, searching for gears.....?
Planet Ford replaced the transmission within 2 weeks under warranty. Complete new unit. The car is perfect again. If you're in the North Houston/Spring TX area I definitely recommend this dealership for purchasing and service.

Wow sorry to hear about your bad luck with the transmissions on both of your Mustangs but glad to hear your dealership took care of it. Here's to many trouble free miles ahead.

I live in Houston and Planet does have a good reputation. I work in service at a Ford dealer in Manvel, and in almost six years there, I have not had a Mustang with a 10 speed issue. F-150, 250, 350 all day long though, and there are probably a dozen trucks in the shop now for trans issues.
I suspect, but cannot confirm, that the Mustang units have gears with a straighter cut for additional strength, which would also account for the whine that so many comment on.
Just my .02 that Mustang trans issues are not common.
