Just tried my new uniden r4 with the USB port. Didn't work. How difficult is it to pop the cover off the rear view mirror?
Not difficult at all. If you have a plastic trim tool, that helps. Start on the left and work your way right.

Reviving this thread a little bit. Do you guys know if the Mirror USB has a timeout for powering off? Looks like my camera stays on after I shut off the car and lock it.

Have you timed it? If it's only a minute or two, I wouldn't worry about it.

When I wired my Uniden R8 radar detector, I used a wiretap and grabbed power from the rain sensor that's under the cover behind the rear view mirror. This post covers that. It shuts down as soon as you turn the ignition off.

I just use google maps on my phone, its has constant speed monitoring, says when I am over the limit, states accidents in the area and where speed traps are, seems to work fine for me.

Google Maps does nothing for you if you're being followed by LE. Also, not as many use it for crowd reported issues like Waze. Highway Radar (app that connects via Bluetooth with my Uniden R8) shows heat maps based in past history and shows crowd reported LE much further away than Waze or Google Maps.

yeah, I know, I am a low volume driver and tend to drive the same routes all the time and pretty much know by heart where are the cops sit, lol.

So really odd, I was running my Escort Passport off of the USB port behind the mirror without problems really save for actually powering the detector off manually.

Then recently, started having issues with power and the radar not powering up. It blips on briefly, then off repeatedly.

It sounds like it shouldn't have worked, but it did which is weird.

I power wired my Escort 360C Radar Detector with the help of the link posted earlier. I then powered my camera though the USB in the mirror assembly. btw, the wire from my dashcam is only a power and ground (black and red) set. The supplied camera cable was way too long so I cut it back/spliced and tucked the wire inside the mirror cover. Looks like they all belong there now.

I have a base model. I routed my dashcam cable under the trim on the side of my windshield.

Basically cigarette lighter cable straight to the windshield, then around the windshield (you can just tuck it under the plastic going around the windshield) and up the passenger side trim. It doesn’t obstruct the vision. And you can just tuck the cable under the plastic trim. It’s solid, doesn’t move anywhere. But not as nice as the mirror USB plug.
Does the 12v power to your dash cam stay on for 1hr+ after shutting off the car?

It stays on for about 2 hours. I typically turn off the dashcam screen when I run it, and never unplug it, never power it down. So far so good.

Also, on my base model, after tucking the cable around the trim I recently added a few drops of shoe glue along the cable length so the cable stays tucked in. I tried fasteners, but they kept falling off. This is just silicone that can easily be torn off.

Yeah sounds about right, just confirming cause I have a base gt and mine don't power off for about 1-2hrs as well. Thanks

...I believe that USB port will only support 5V. ...
yep, the standard for USB type A says the max voltage is 5V no matter what generation. only USB type C can deliver higher voltages, up to 48V
