Going through this myself as my current car (BMW 550) is on the way out the door. Looking at a LOT of options from full electric, to hybrid, to full on dino burners. To be honest I'm still trying to figure that out for myself. All those test drives I did last year and I still don't have a definitive answer. All I know is that I'm now deciding between the Mustang GT/Mach-4 (if it gets made) and the Prius/Camry (both AWD), and I'm not in a rush to sell/trade-in my EcoBoost. As always, any and all help will be highly appreciated from my end. Thanks again!
1) I can drive the car long distances and still get out and function when I get to my destination. Long distances may mean 800+ miles in a single day.
2) It can carry all the stuff I need it to carry. Groceries, musical instruments (guitar, trombone, Cello, etc...not talking piccolo sized instruments here), stuff for work, etc.
2b) Edit add on - If you have kids, it needs to be able to take you, your spouse, and the kids where they need to go, WITH all your stuff. It's not a/the daily driver if you take the daddy or mommy mobile out everytime the kids need to go somewhere. So if you have to take the kids to soccer and you are toting around the net of balls, plus 2 kids, plus the spouse, plus the cooler, the sliced oranges, etc, make sure you have the room. Also, the kids or shortest kid and shortest parent need to fit in the back. I literally cannot fit in the back of some vehicles (heck, I can't fit in the front of some vehicles either). Don't subject others to it either.
3) Able to get me to and from a place I need on a single fill-up/charge. That means the local airport(s), place of business, and business day trips.
4) When I drive it, it makes me happy. I don't ever want to drive a car I dread getting into. I want a daily driver that I am giddy about driving...EVERY DAY.
5) Number 4 means it can handle any weather mother nature throws at it, snow, sleet, salt, rain, heat, cold. Driving happy doesn't mean only on the good days, but fearing for your life on the bad days, it means happy on the good and great days, and even the bad weather days....but just taking it a little easier and being a bit more alert to possible problems on the road ahead
6) In the end, it's about smiles/gallon(or kWh) If you don't smile when driving the car, why buy it?
