Hey Folks,
I am in the process of ordering new tires for some 20x10/11 rims that I am putting on my S650 PP. This is the first time I’m installing a set of aftermarket wheels on a vehicle so I want to make sure I get the details right, with the help of those of you who are experienced in this type of stuff. The goal of this wheel setup is to be practical in daily driving applications while still looking aesthetically pleasing. I understand that the term “aesthetically pleasing” can be subjective so to me it means a tire that is low profile yet adequately fills the wheel well both in depth and height.
With that being said I have narrowed my options down to the following; The type of tire without a doubt will be Michelin PS4S as their performance in daily driving applications only compares to the Continental DWS06. I don’t plan on tracking my car or taking it to the drag strip so the PS4S should be more than adequate, Cup 2’s or slicks would be overkill.
Tire sizing is where I am looking for insight, specifically for the rears. I am pretty set on the fronts being 275/30r20 but am split on what I should do for the rears, 315/30r20, 305/30r20, or 305/35r20? I would like the rear tires to be as wide as possible, however based on my research anything over a 315 width either pokes or rubs. I also read that it isn't recommended to install a 315 tire on anything under an 11.5 rim, is this accurate? If that’s the case and we are left with only the 305/30 or 305/35 sizes, which size would be best in relation to the 3% rule and my goals for the setup? Would a 30 sidewall be too small in terms of practicality and affect the ride greatly? Ive referenced a bunch of “tire calculators” and everything checks out in terms of fitment. 305/30 has a -1.8% difference in diameter from stock, 305/35 has a +2.5% difference in diameter from stock, and 315/30 has a -1.1% difference so it seems like I am splitting hairs at this point, but I want to get it right. Long story short I am looking for insight from folks who have had or has wheel setups with a 30 sidewall and if the ride is too harsh/impractical, also if it is possible to fit 315’s on an 11 wide rim. Pics would be appreciated but only if they are the sizes mentioned. Here’s the cliff-notes of my situation:
- 2024 S650 GT Performance Pack – Stock 27” 255/40r19 (F) 27.7” 275/40r19 (R) Pirelli’s (yuck)
- Switching to HRE FF10 rims 20x10 ET35 & 20x11 ET50
- Michelin Pilot Sport 4s tires 275/30r20 fronts
- 315/30r20 305/30r20 or 305/35r20 for the rears?
I appreciate the insight in advance!
