I guess it's called a resonator. I saw a picture of one that had been removed and it appeared to have two straight end to end pipes with lots of small holes (~1/8") in them. I couldn't tell if there was any packing. I assume the right and left sides can communicate via those small holes, giving a crossover effect.

At this point, I'm not planning on changing anything on the exhaust -- sounds pretty good to my ear. That said, if one were to remove that resonator and put an H pipe in its place, anyone know whether the exhaust would be noticeably louder, or just different?

It will be a little louder, especially on cold starts.

I did a resonator delete and went with a Steeda H pipe. It's right on the line for me. Not sure I could handle Headers and an H Pipe and still enjoy it.

I did it on my S550 GT and loved it… best money I spent on that car…

I have an h pipe and it's a little louder than stock but I personally would like it slightly louder so I'm thinking maybe changing the mufflers as well.

I hear the H pipe does little fit HP. Makes me believe people do it mainly for sound. I'd do it, but don't want to waste money. Cherry Bomb M-80s are loud enough.

H-Pipe is mostly for the old school muscle car sound and just a wee bit of low end torque. X-Pipe is a better choice for a wee bit of higher RPM HP and torque (not much), but it will sound a bit "raspy". Those who track thier cars typically go X-Pipe. I plan on going H-Pipe.

So does this part act like a crossover?

Both are considered crossover pipes.

Don't expect either to add gobs of power on thier own. They won't. By themselves, people typically do them for the change in sound/pitch. To see much change while making exhaust only changes, you're needing long tube headers, cat delete, resonator delete (X or H), and different mufflers.

Did H pipe on 2015 S550 with stock mufflers and didn't notice much difference in sound but did lose some weight.

Using an H or X pipe to delete resonator will affect your sound and provide a little weight reduction. You might get some power gains. What hasn’t been mentioned yet is the drone that you’ll have to live with which, imo, can be terrible. That will, of course, depend on the pipes you go with and any other mods you have through the intake-exhaust. Personal preference is also a factor in livability with exhaust drone. I was in a coworker’s challenger who had a lower rpm drone that would have driven me insane were it my car
