I'm a long-time Corvette owner who is new to the Mustang world. I picked up my 2024 Dark Horse yesterday and I was wondering:

1. What type of oil should I use? Corvettes are Mobil 1 fully synthetic advocates. Any suggestions?

2. I will be storing the car from mid-November to mid-March. Should I fill the gas tank completely before I put it away?

Thanks!

How did you store your Corvette in the winter?
The newer Vettes (C7) recommended filling the tank to only 1/4 full to avoid contamination on the tank sending unit. For the C6 generation and earlier it was fine to fill the tank completely.

Question #1 they say use 5w30 Synthetic (FULL) or Synthetic (BLEND) depending on what you like.

Since you are in NOTL you are going to have a hard time getting the Motorcraft Oil that FORD uses up here. You will pay more for shipping than the oil itself so if you find a good alternatifve let me know LOL in the mean time I'm using CASTROL 5W30 Advanced Full Synthetic.

Question #2 that one I don't really know. I used to store my GT Premium with full tank and then start it occasionally and let it get up to operating temp, move it a foot or two forward and back in the garage and then park it again.

On a side note; are you part of the NFC Stangs club? You going on the cruise on Saturday?

It's a facebook group from down in Niagara Falls/St. Catharines. I'm a member and they have a cruise coming up this weekend. There was someone that just got a DH in that group.

@LuckyGuy ..... congratulations. Long time Mustang owner here. Use Ford oil of the viscosity your manual recommends. I ALWAYS use FULL synthetic. DO NOT let a synthetic blend anywhere near that beautiful engine!!!!!!! You can purchase FULL synthetic Motorcraft from any Ford dealer. I buy it from the parts department in Ford Motorcraft jugs and hand it to the tech just in case the dealer (some do) buy bulk oil. That way I know exactly what's going into my engine***** Also ask your tech to pre fill the oil filter. I tip him to follow my instructions and he loves it. BTW - I didn't get that dreaded 5.0 BBQ/Typewriter tic possibly because I used FULL synthetic and prefilled my oil filter.

I bought new so I could treat my vehicle - and specifically my power train right and not have to deal with the problems of a used Mustang created by some ignorant, cheap idiot.

If you track it follow the specific DH maintenance suggestions. Ford Motorcraft oil is made by Conoco-Phillips with a superior VI package from S-OIL of South Korea. I have used all kinds of "racing oils" in the past for marine and land applications and I probably wasted a lot of money. Make sure your oil is changed as hot as the dealer will allow but at least very, very warm. The Ford filters are made, I have been told, by the same manufacturer of WIX and Kendall. If correct (I believe it) they will be absolutely fine. Depending on how you drive you may wish to change your oil and filter more frequently than Ford recommends. Cheapest/best insurance ever.

Look at your two induction box air filters after 30 days to see how fast they get dirty. They can be shop vacuumed a several times before replacing. Again cheap insurance.

When I put any of my vehicles up for the winter I add fuel stabilizer to the gas and drive them a bit to run it through the system. I put in 91 or higher octane fuel. In the case of the 2024 Mustang GT I will change the oil (while Hot) on the last day before I store it. I Plan to start it every three weeks and run it up to operating temperature. In the spring, I will change the oil before driving it. If you don't want to or can't to start it while it's stored it that's fine, IMO.

Put a little extra air in the tries to help avoid flat spots.

Select a soft breathable cover.

So THAT is the secret? I have an alignment scheduled for Monday since nobody in the Mississauga could do it before hand (which means I'm gonna miss the Saturday Mustang cruise LOL).

I'll check to see how they sell it and get some jugs for home and trunk!

Regarding your oil, what's in the owners manual for oil spec in Canada? In the US it's WSS-M2C961-A1 for 5w-30 semi- or full-synthetic and WSS-M2C963-A1 for 0w-30 in cold climates. It's an SN Plus/SP rated oil.

My 2 cents about oil based on experience and conversations with my uncle a shell oil chemist (retd.) ALL oils contain some synthetic or they would never pass epa mileage tests. ALL major brands use decent base stocks. The differences appear when the VI (viscosity improver packages are packaged for individual sellers). Mobil 1 FULL synthetic probably the best. Most of the other TOP are pretty close. Too close to matter unless your are in a NASCAR race. The VI package is what saves your engine when it gets a massive heat flash over - these are not infrequent. OR when you are driving it "with spirit" on a hot day! When these flashovers, often referred to as temperature spikes, happen top VI improvement packages build long chain polymer webs. If the flashover takes a nano second the polymer build takes .5 nano second. The FULL synthetic is your engines BEST life preserver. All the crapping on Ford aside, the 2024 5.0 is an absolute marvel of engineering. Does any rational person think Ford would sell crap oil or oil filters for these beauties. No frickin' way would they. Ford's semi synthetic is no doubt at all a great oil. Their FULL synthetic is IMO as good as any. As far as people who buy a synthetic to increase their oil intervals - what? - seriously? You're that cheap? Geez buy Ford FULL synthetic and change it, MAXIMUM, at the manual's recommended interval - sooner if you (tell the truth here) - drive it like it is a Mustang.... Ha Ha. BTW one of the hardest challenges to an oil is having a car stuck in traffic on a hot day with the AC on - you better have a FULL synthetic on that day. :-) There's fast, there's cheap. there's right - pick one.
