I know that European Mustangs get anti-rust protection for the undercarriage. You can see the yellow or black marks on different locations to protect the car against rust.

What I know is that the American Mustangs don't get this treatment from the factory. Very strange, because they are built in the same factory (I think).

So my question is for the Canadians. Do you know if your Mustangs get the same anri-rust treatment as the European guys?

The rust treatment for export cars is done after the car leaves the line, prior to being sent to the docks.

Do you know what they use? I saw that the under carriage was totally black on the Mustangs that go to Dubai. Even the exhausts were black sprayed.

I might see the need for extra protection due in part to the salt air they endure during shipping. I wonder about Dubai, however, as everything there is nothing but sand.

The protection is not only because of the shipping. It is to protect the car for a longer term.

That's why I wonder why they don't want to protect the US cars for that matter.

Probably because the laws outside the US order to protect the cars.

You can have undercoating done everywhere in the US. Nowadays, all cars are zinc coated under the paint, so the necessity of undercoating is lessened.

I drove my old mustang for 17 years. Parked it on the street with all the snow/salt and had no rust issues at all. I only started to get concerned after the "aerodynamic holes" in the fender liners fiasco. Prior to that the thought of doing anything to prevent rust never crossed my mind.

Having owned S550 and S650, both were smothering in that stuff. There is absolutely no preparation done prior to application, its just sprayed on without any care or skill. Check out the video below from 4 min 50 sec -

That paint ends up across the underbody, but also onto the visible exhaust tips, side skirts and even the rear wheels. I've also seen it misted across the lower painted sections of the doors. On my S650, I had to remove it from the exhaust tips, and it was slathered on my rear wheels too.

The paint doesn't seem very durable, its somewhat like bitumastic paint. With some effort, I managed to dissolve and remove it using Eulex.

I had to use Eulex M because of the matte finish of these wheels.

I really don't know why they do this to export cars, especially considering it taints what it a brand-new car......................you shouldn't have to be removing overspray on a brand-new car. I would argue that the few weeks the car spends on the dock and in transit would pose a significantly lower exposure to salt than what US-spec cars would endure driving on salted roads in some states of the US or Canada.

@RaceRedder ..... Canadian Mustangs arrive at the dealer the same as American Mustangs - no factory under coatings....which is what I like, as I think most factory under coatings are crap. I had a pre-purchase agreement with my dealer to allow me 45-60 minutes on a lift in their detailing shop to apply an under spray to the bottom of my new 2024 GT with a product called Corrosion Free. It is a light oil that is not waxy, gooey or tarry. It runs everywhere and does a great job. Highly recommended where I live with salt brine spray from November to March on the road surfaces. Mustangs with no under coatings in that environment rust FAST. I do not drive my Mustangs from November to April so they never see salt placed by road crews. I use the corrosion free to keep the underside pristine from normal rain generated rust. I touch-up with small cans if I see areas where the coverage is thinning. Corrosion Free is used by fleet companies I know, the Canadian Department of Defense on their vehicles and is available in a number of formats in Canada and the USA. I had been using a product similar to this, then when Corrosion Free when it arrived on the market I switched to it. I have been doing this for 30 years. Even my winter vehicles: November -March show no meaningful rust anywhere.

I actually like that the exhausts are black. I would have kept it like that. I understand it makes the car a bit dirty, but I still choose for that protection than coming with no protection.

But its not consistent. In my case, the visible part of the exhaust tips were peppered with the black paint, so it looked terrible. Made it look like I had driven over fresh tar.

How many KMs before the burning smell from the rust coating disappears after driving it. I'm up to about 400kms and the smell is as strong as ever?

400 is nothing. That's what I can drive in a day easily. Make at least 2000km or more.

Mine has about 800 km on it and the smell is mostly gone, unless I hook into the throttle and get it nice and hot and it comes back a little. Really, the smoke and smell are worst during the first 100 - 200 km, by then its mostly burnt into the metal.
