I was getting my 2024 Mustang GT (Job 2) detailed. I gave the detailer the spare key. He vacuumed the interior, put the key in the cupholder, and closed the door. When he went to move the car, the doors were locked. I didn't think this was supposed to happen!

What's up?

He locked the door by hitting the button before closing it?

I can lock my F150 manually with a key fob inside.

The key detection is supposed to differentiate between inside and outside of the vehicle but it's not great at that (i've started my car with the key outside of it). If the key was motionless for a minute it would turn off though so wouldn't be able to unlock it again.

That happened to me as well. I park in a secure lot at work so I left my keys in the cup holder while i was at work. Got off work and the car was locked. I know I didn’t lock the door because i follow the same procedure with all of my cars while at work. Had use the ford app to unlock the car. Is there a way to turn that feature off

ive seen this happen many times, its the reason why all service departments should roll down the windows of vehicles on the service drive. the reason the key is able to be locked in the vehicle is because of one of the possible use cases of the SecuriCode keyless entry. you go to do something, but lock the key in your vehicle for any reason, but you're still able to get in because of the keypad. there is no fix for it or anything, you just have to be aware and keep your window rolled down if you plan to exit the vehicle with the key still inside

Happened to me once when I owned my Focus ST.

Key locked in the ST. I'm parked in my driveway, and the spare fob is in the house so NP right? "Fraid not! I'd locked the house door on my way out to the ST. 🤬

Had to call my daughter to come over after she got out of work with a spare house key. Man! I had to take **** from her for a month over that situation.

Oddly enough......................I have a spare house key stashed outside now! 😆

100% possible.
Years ago, a guy flew out to pick up a brand new Raptor and road trip it back home. They stopped just off I10 in San Antonio. He unpacked into his hotel, and it turns out his wife left her bag in the truck with the spare key. The truck was gone inside of 15 seconds.

The thief pulled the door handle, twisted the lock cylinder to get in. All the F series prior to ~ 2022 had this same design. This process can be done by almost anyone in under 10 seconds. once inside, he hit start, pressed the brakes and took off, doing a sync master reset somewhere along the way.

Don’t leave your keys in the car.

I guess it depends on your clientbase. Some try not to move seats and adjust windows because, in broken cars, people won't be happy if you can't get it back to the way it was. Bad regulators and/or seat motors aren't uncommon in junkers. The less stuff you touch, the fewer problems you'll have to own.

personally, i would rather be on the hook for a window regulator than let some keys get locked in a vehicle, because a broken part being fixed for free makes the customer happy, but being asked to come down with your spare key because the main one was locked in the vehicle will certainly not
