Clicking and clacking when car is off and I'm nearby with my keys

I'm sure this is normal and happens to everyone, but what is the purpose? What is the car checking or doing when it's making all that noise?

I’ve heard the same. Even with the hood open and the car off I hear these clicking random noises.

those sounds are the modules doing self tests to make sure everything is working properly. it is more concerning if you dont hear those sounds

Same here. I find them kinda cool when I hear them. Looks like they are coming from the back of the steering wheel near the top of the dash somewhere.

Mine does it when I'm nowhere near it with the keys. My husband will be out in the garage doing whatever he does, and my car is just talking to him the whole time. Keys are 40 feet away, inside the house.

that is still normal. the vehicle does periodic checks, but most notably does checks when the key is seen approaching so it knows its ready to drive right now

I also thought it was a security thing as in don't approach me I can click and clank and alert other people nearby

I think it's just mocking him... because it knows he doesn't get to drive it.

(I really would let him drive it, but he's afraid he'd hurt it somehow and then I'd have to kill him, and go to jail... it would be a whole thing... and no one wants that...)

Mine does it as well. She's greeting me and "begging" me to take her out for a spin.

If you have your keys in your pocket and walk close to your own car, it unlocks your door and does check on preparing you for your ride!

Warning it may trap you in your seat and threat you with the seat belt lock up!

Unfortunately the latter is false! Tee hee!

My 2019 Ranger makes weird noises too, but I'm used to such things. I have five rooms in my house which use Occupancy Detectors to turn on the lights if the ambient light is too low (dressing room, laundry, etc.).
