Yes, I read the manual!

This is driving me insane. Everytime I turn on my adaptive cruise control the car defaults to the speed limit and slows down after 30 seconds to a minute. The manual says you can shut this off, but nothing I select seems to override it. It just keeps happening over and over again.

There are two cruise control buttons on the wheel. I thought the bottom one was the override but it seems to serve no function at all . Can anyone walk me through this and explain what I'm going wrong?

Thanks!

This happens even by double pressing the speed limit button (to disable it), before engaging the cruise control?

I have not tried to doubles press it before engaging cruise control. Are you saying that's would I should be doing?

I do that as part of my starting procedure, otherwise the car will beep at me constantly because of speed limits. :) I don't know if it affects the cruise control at all (I don't use it), give it a try.

Yeah, it's EU safety rating idiocy... it defaults to "ON" every time you start the car (hence you have to disable it every time). Once you pass the speed limit set for a road, it start to warn you about it (visually and by sound), again and again and again.

Speed sign recognition and adaptive cruise control are separate functions

Not sure about this: if you're driving along a road with the cruise control set to a certain speed, I'm pretty confident that if the speed limit (with sign recognition) is ON and the max speed of that road is lower than the set speed, the cruise control will auto-adapt to that speed.
Between the "double tap" on that button, will not disable the sign recognition, it only disables the speed limit chime (and potentially the cruise control adapting.. hence I suggested to test).

I think it's the speed limiter setting. Looks like I have to adjust

It doesn't default to on in my car.

Yes, which is very confusing.

I get no chimes or warnings like you. You must have your settings adjusted differently.

It looks like the speed limiter function is taking over when my cruise control is on. The weird thing is, the manual simply says to turn it on or off by pressing the button. But my button has never defaulted to on. It does seem like you can change the speed limit in the limiter setting, maybe that will help. But I still don't understand why this only happens when the cruise control is on.

Afaik, when the limiter is on, you can override the limit only by a certain percentage (I don't even remember what is it.. 5% or such), so turning it off will eventually ignore the road limits and the cruise control will use your set speed (as said I never tried).
Mine defaults to "on" because it's a EU vehicle, we have the EuroNCAP thing, and to obtain better score you need to "default" certain safety features to "on"... the speed limit is one of them (hence you can't turn it off permanently). There might be a way via FORSCAN, didn't tried it yet.

Ok, I think I solved the mystery.

It looks like the "predictive speed assist" function was turned on under the adaptive cruise control settings. Predictive speed assist can adjust your vehicle speed based on road geometry and speed limits provided by navigation WHILE USING CRUISE CONTROL.

This apparently, is a separate function of the "speed limiter" feature on the wheel which operates independently of cruise control but functions very similar. 🤦‍♂️

Yeesh Ford. That was a tough one to track down. Hopefully this fixes the issue.

IIRC, what you are describing is a setting that can be turned off in the menus on the screen.
