Hello All,

Just want to share my 3-month experience with the ford performance oil & oil separator. I opened up both reservoir and found out that passenger-side has collected quite a bit of oil over a 3 month period (daily drive). However, the driver-side one is completely dry, with no sign of any oil residue. Is it normal? I believe I installed everything correctly. Feel free to share your experience and thoughts. Thank you!

I attached short videos of both reservoir right after they were opened.

Yes, that is normal.

On the Coyote, while the Driver can install catch cans on both sides, the Driver's side can often has little to none. A Driver's side can is often installed for a car which sees time at the track or has a unique engine setup.

Modded cars can be different. Turbos or superchargers often involve at least one breather. Catch can installation and positioning can vary with these engines.

On my Gen3, I recover between 10-15ml every 1500 mi/2400 km. If you want to measure the amount, head to the baking isle in the shops. They should have measuring cups of all standards for small amounts.

so about 3 tea spoons in a thousand miles or 2 or 3 oz between oil changes if my math is close. How many oz does it hold?

I had both side separators on my first coyote and in 25,000 mi never pulled a drop out of the left one. I was told at that time the left one was really only necessary for supercharged or turbocharged cars. I only install the right side one on this car and it's about half full in 5000 MI. I have a firm believer that you should not own one of these cars without having an oil separator.

Guess I better get on the stick come Monday!

Ssssoooo..........................if I get one for my NA Coyote; have it installed on the passenger side of the motor? Correct? TY!

I'm using a unit from JLT, which holds up to 3 oz / 85 ml. Close to half a cup.

I did look at the Ford Performance site, the installation literature, etc., and the fill size is not listed.

But the measuring cups and items I referenced, those are good for anything in the garage like that. Some also use food syringes, especially when they're measuring out other additives for the drivetrain. Next time you're at the shops, check out the kitchen utensils isle. You could use any of those and water to confirm what it holds.

Excuse my ignorance but is it really a big deal to not have one of these on my car? I have a 24 GT (base model) that's completely stock that I use as my DD unless the weather is crappy here in MI. Not even sure what this does and what I need it for?

I consider using one a step towards goodness. The oil I'm capturing would otherwise accumulate throughout the engines intake system. It also has an opportunity to increase spark knock or create deposits on the valves.

Setting those comments aside, the separator gives me something of a window into the operation of the engine. If I see a larger-than-expected amount of oil, moisture or smell a heavy presence of fuel, those are tells I'd want to investigate.

Others consider them akin to buying snake oil and a complete waste of money.

YMMV.

I think it's subjective. I can see a need for it for some use cases, but for others, not so much. Furthermore, why would Ford not include it from the factory if it was that critical? That's just my $0.02.

Exactly. Catch cans work. There are plenty of YouTube videos showing the difference between a motor with catch cans and a similar motor without them.

If you don’t have one, buy one (or two). I also have one on my Ford Explorer EcoBoost. I empty the catch cans on my Dark horse and explorer every oil change.

It's kind of like Heinz patches for the inner fender holes you can do it or not do it. Most of the people on this forum won't have these cars 2 years from now, they'll be on to the next bright shiny thing. there's those of us that are going to keep it for the long haul will do these things it will extend it's life. It for 150 bucks it's a good idea

Pity they dont sell the passenger aide separately. Seems like a waste to buy both. Wonder if the s550 one can be adapted.
