I read an article recently about consumer pushback regarding screens. This was from both a convenience and safety perspective. I’ll post it if I can find it.

This isn’t the one but it is pretty interesting.
https://www.kiplinger.com/personal-finance/car-touchscreens-unsafe-why-do-we-have-them#:~:text=He%20added%2C%20“Drivers%20can%20access,an%20accident%20waiting%20to%20happen.”
I'm not saying that some people don't like screens. Some don't. But almost all new designs have touchscreen controls with only a few exceptions. And there's no evidence of it reversing.

Didn't the Germans already do this once or twice and ech time it backfired and worked? I will find the articles. I think it was Mercedes once and they came back with a vengance on the buttons.

As someone with longer legs and short'ish arms, I end up in an awkward driving position because of this touch screen bullshit.

Also having the icon to return to android auto / carplay on the top far right side of the screen is just dumb, @Ford Motor Company because then I definitely have to adjust myself and lean forward to be able to hit it.

The only saving grace for the center touch screen is the one physical favourite button ford allowed us to have.

I’d strongly prefer buttons too but I don’t think Ford wants to risk cheesing off all the folks that bit on the screens. I know I’d be ticked off. And forget about trying to trade a screen car for a button car; you’d take a big hit. Unless of course they offered a reasonably priced retrofit kit, which is doubtful.

This infotainment unit is probably the only thing I dislike about the S650.. we should be developing things that don’t take our eyes off the road to use. I’m a hard button type of guy. Shouldn’t have to fight everything on it to get things done. At least I saw a thread this morning how to reboot it while driving. System is buggy at best.

I’m going to moderately, yet respectfully disagree. I leave mine on navigation, which I find to be a big improvement over sync3, and I can still see radio stuff to the right. The nav screen is detailed enough that I can make out upcoming road names, it zooms in at major intersections, then back out and I can see traffic delays without being in navigation. Very handy for venturing into more populated areas.

I think my main issue is like OP - the lack of a physical interface to the climate controls; there’s got to be a way to give us some real controls. The rest is kind of a wash but they also use the screen to toggle on some fun features so that’s probably better than having to do it through a gauge cluster menu - think how many more options you would need to weed through.

I don't have much of an issue with the Climate on the screen, even though buttons would be easier. my biggest gripe is they buried the off button in another window. Here in GA is has been nice temp in the 50-60 in the morning and 780-80 in the afternoon. If I want to roll down the windows and enjoy the cool temp i have to dig in the second menu to power off the AC. How about a button on teh main screen or something like you press auto for 3 sec it turns off the system.

Back in the late 80's my across the street neighbor's dad bought the new "sexy" Buick Reatta. The first day he had it he was showing me and my brothers the cool touch screen display and all the "cool" things it did. He was very excited.

Two weeks later, I saw him again and he told me the touch screen controls for everything were a terrible idea and he was sure many would be killed or injured while trying to use the damn thing! He was no longer excited. He got rid of that car not very long afterwards.

Within 2 years Buick redesigned the dash and added a bunch of physical controls back in. Clearly this was a terrible idea in 1988, and it is just as bad an idea today.

My 2018 GT PP1 was one of the best cars, and the best Mustang I ever owned. Unfortunately, someone plowed into me from behind while I was stopped and it was totaled. My next car was to be a S650, in Dark Horse config, until I sat in one. No physical controls for climate or radio was a no-go for me. I ended up buying a used 2021 Mach 1 HP instead. A much better choice, and it doesn't look like a Camaro, so it actually worked out better in the end. The Mach 1 is a phenomenal car on every level.

But way to go Ford for discouraging a sale!

I have always bought V8 manual transmission Mustangs and I'm on my 8th. Unless cooler heads prevail and a common sense cockpit layout comes back, I'll have to nurse this one along because I don't want something that takes my eyes off the road to handle common functions that should have physical controls in the first place.

Neither Ford nor any other manufacturer is gonna change it back. This is the future and they’re only gonna dig in deeper. To the extent it is an age thing (and I’m not sure that is a 100% infallible rule) that tells all we need to know. We boomers and old timers are dying off so by definition we don’t matter much anymore. Apparently it’s more important for many younger buyers to play with a screen than go fast. OK, I get it and knew it when I bought my ‘24 and while I’ll never love the screen I’ll adapt and get to the point I can use it.

I do have to say one thing though that surprises me a bit: safety. It’s just flat dangerous to be staring at and fiddling with a screen when you’re rolling down the road at highway speeds. Ergo, I pull over to adjust the fan! And just wait until some enterprising young engineer figures out how to beam games from his iPhone to the big screen. You know it’s coming.

Preferences? Look, I hate lamb. Really hate the gamey taste. Have all my life, always will. And I get tired of people telling me to just put this, that or the other on it and you’ll love it. I say why bother, just eat something you like to start with. You could probably tart up dog squeeze to palatability but why bother? Anyway, most of us who don’t love it will adapt like me and we ain’t got that long to worry about it anyway.
Wrong.

Volkswagen made touch screen buttons on their vehicles and after complaints from the community they changed it back to physical buttons.

People like you are why it doesn't change.

Not sure what your reasoning is there, if there is any.

But I’m pretty sure I don’t care.

Just an fyi, you can control the radio with your right thumb on the steering wheel in the s650s, you can change stations, volume up/down, all without having to take your eyes off the road. Easiest it's ever been.

That's true. My S550 can do that also. But for me the rotary volume control is more intuitive. And there is still the aspect of no climate controls at all.

Thinking back, I was also not a fan of the electric e-brake.

I must have the only Mustang with Climate controls ALWAYS on the bottom of the right screen , or I must be taking crazy pills.

I don't drive our Mustang every day , but when I do , I look over and they are always right there on the bottom of the screen.

You touch them , things happen. Just like a knob or button does.

These are modern cars that have AUTOMATIC climate control.
You set it and forget it.

If you want a tad warmer touch the +
if you want it a tad cooler , touch the -
You want fan higher or lower , just touch the Auto fan button.
Need high Defrost , FORD put a button right in the middle.

These controls are ALWAYS visible. 👆

There is no reason to shut off the A/C. Just leave it on and the car is smart enough to know when to use it , and when not to. Do you constantly adjust the temp at home too ?
