We have! We've come a long way... back in my chamois days, they were made of animal hide!
When I started detailing in the early 2000's, I thought I had hit the jackpot when I was given a Meguiar's "Soft Buff" Synthetic Chamois. I ended up with a few of them, which I would wash out religiously after to use to keep them clean. I used this for longer than I care to admit to. You can still buy these things too -

I ended up sidelining the chamois with the below waffle weave towels. I still have them as beater towels, they are just so durable.
The same happened with towels. I had a small selection of those white cotton Meguiar's Terry Toweling Cloths, which I ironically used to buff off Mothers California Gold Liquid Wax. I then "upgraded" to the Meguiar's Supreme Shine Microfiber towels, which was their toe in the microfiber water at the time. You can also still buy these -

I treated all of those towels as if they were gold plated, I had to ration them if polishing or waxing. In my defense, I was young and cash strapped, microfiber was also very expensive at the time. Now I (we) have access to a huge variety of towels to choose from, not to mention the cost has come down.
And so, we arrive at another DFB detailing life lesson - DO NOT BUY the pre-packed microfiber towels sold in Auto stores from the likes of Meguiar's, Mothers, Turtle Wax or Bowden's Own. That's not because they are bad, but rather they are grossly overpriced for what they are. You are basically paying a huge markup for those companies to put individual towels into packaging so they can be hung on a dusty auto-store shelf.
I'm all for setting fire to cash in the name of detailing, but you get far better value buying towels from the likes of The Rag Company, Microfiber Madness, Autofiber ect, or via their distributors. In other words, you more towels for money, and in detailing, more is more when it comes to towels.
Also, always wash brand new towels before use, even if they are sold in airtight packaging. Washing prior to use removes any dust, debris and any loose manufacturing fibers. It will also help with absorbency.
