If your Oil Life Monitor (OLM) is telling you it's time to change the oil, you should. The OLM is driven by several factors, to include miles, temperatures, RPMs, amount of time driven, frequency of each drive, etc. At one extreme, a car not driven at all, the OLM will expire at the end of one year. At the other, someone who tracks their car consistently, the OLM will expire much quicker.

If the OLM is not alarming, but you're interested in changing after the drivetrain's break-in period, you can do that. I did. But it is not a requirement. Several trains of thought on that. I've attached two of my previous posts and some other threads.

YMMV.

If it's been a year, I'd go two years if you are using synthetic

but if it's your first 1500 miles I'd change it

Based on the thorough posts and opinions on whether I should change the oil and oil filter my mind says: yes. I shall do 2 things: change the oil to pure synthetic, Calumet Branded Products, Royal Purple HPS 5W 30 and keep a sample for Blackstone.
Thank you all for your informative responses.

FWIW - was told by two different Ford dealerships - the first oil change due at 5K miles. This is for both a 2024 S650 GT and a 2024 Ford F350 King Ranch. My wife has a 2024 Hyundai Palisade - same deal.

I changed oil after the first 1000 miles, and then every 6 months, full synthetic. I did that on my old '07 car and had no issues.

With no reference to mileage driving during those 6 months, that advice could be spot on or it could indicate nothing more than a significant waste of money.

I changed oil after the first 100 miles and then every 5 days, full synthetic. I did that on my old '07 car and had no issues. See how that works?

Yeah... I drive around 12K miles per year tops, with multiple road trips. It's never more than that.

If you're driving 6K between oil changes every 6 months, you're definitely leaving a lot of oil life on the table, and wasting money -- especially if you're using full synthetic.

Yes, yes, it's your money and your car, so do as you please, but you're not doing anything more for your Mustang than if you were to just change it once a year with that kind of mileage.

Send a sample off to Blackstone Labs the first few times you change your oil (take the sample mid-drain). They will analyze the oil and tell you if you should be extending your oil drain interval. They will send you the test sample kits (for collection) for free.

Think about it this way...

The car companies want your car to last through the warranty period. Or at least the beancounters need at least a certain large percentage of them to make it through.

After that, do you think they care? Do you really think they want you driving your vehicle until the wheels fall off? Of course not! They want you to trade that thing in and spend another $40-70k with them!

So, what interest do they have in giving you the best information on maintaining the car? Absolutely none. If everyone kept their cars for 200k the car companies would all go out of business.

Besides, they can't even decide what oil weight you should use. These are the same companies that use plastic parts in their engines, stupid leaky o-ring coolant quick disconnects, failing VCT components, blah blah

Don't forget there are cars that make it to 50-60k on either the factory oil or one oil change. Yes, some people never get their oil changed and their cars still run! Is it a good idea? That's up to you to decide! Everyone knows the urban legend of the person who never changes the oil because they're going to sell the car in 3 years so why waste money on 3-6 oil changes?

Will your engine run alright if you change the oil every 10k? It might. Could an oil analysis come back 'good' and make you feel warm and fuzzy when you post it online? Does an oil analysis really tell you everything about the inside of your engine? What parts are gummed up etc?

Will your engine be in better shape if you change it sooner? Of course.

It's a good practice to bring in your new car to a Ford dealer on a regular basis. Sure, it's not necessary if you have no issues, but that's how potential issues can get discovered. Plus in case something goes wrong, you have proof that you were servicing your car on a regular basis. Regarding oil changes: back in the day the recommendation was 4 times a year, but that's excessive. So I bring it in twice a year like clockwork.

The manual calls for 5w-30, API SP/ILSAC GF-6A spec oil to among other things reduce the incidence of LSPI. The only official change I know of is Whipple recommends 5w-50.

So why 10w-30 with an oil that is higher in Zinc/Phosphorous (which can cause catalytic converter issues) and specifically states "is recommended for vehicles no longer under manufacturer warranty"?
