Shadow black pony with “premium” stock silver wheels.
I like the style but not the color.
I’m considering getting the stock wheels powder coated gloss black..
I found a shop that will remove the wheels, powder coat , balance and reinstall on the pony for $800.
Anyone have any experience with powder coating wheels? Pros & cons.
Thanks

I powder coated some SRT wheels once. They had some curb damage.

They fixed all the damage and coated them in some shade of flat black. Looked awesome and brand new. They had a big selection of colors and could do multiple colors as well.

I can’t really think of any cons. I believe they charged like $450 if you leave them the car. $350 if you bring I just the rims and tires mounted. I’m in the Chicago area.

That's a little too much for powder coating. For that money I will put a few hundred on top and buy a new set of gloss black rims and you can make the stock rims your winter set.

I see where you’re coming from.
A winter set really does apply to me.😉

I just bought some used 18" wheels off Ebay for my Jeep. They had some minor scuffing so I had them powder coated gloss black. They look amazing. Cost was $450 just for the powder coat.

You can call it whatever you want. A winter set. A spare set. I just wanted to give you some options. At least you have another set of wheels in the color you like for not much more than the 800 you were trying to spend on sanding the wheels.

But I guess your comment is more fixed about "I don't have winter in the area where I live, so your advice doesn't apply to me".

Well good luck then. Spend it.

I appreciate the option. I just got a chuckle out of “winter set”; that’s not a normal term used in SE LA.
The weather man said that this week there may be a chance of snow. 1 inch of snow shuts down the world around here.

Guys,
I appreciate y’all’s input. In my 50 plus years of hot rodding & modding I’ve never had anything powder coated. It seems like those of y’all who have were satisfied with the results.
Thanks again.

I've had all kinds of car parts powder coated in my 76+ years. Powder coating is very durable and looks great. Can't really think of any cons. Actually, $800 doesn't sound too bad for 4 wheels. I'm changing my brake caliper color in the spring and have decided to have them painted instead of powder coated. I'm going to have them painted at a shop that has done custom painting on several of my cars.

In order to have calipers powder coated, you have to remove the calipers, take them apart, send them to the powder coater, and put them back together with new seals when they're done. Obviously, your car is going to be down during that time unless you find a place that does an exchange. If it were me, I'd give some serious thought to having the wheels painted.

Thanks for the comments.
I’ll have my car tied up for 2- 2 1/2 days, remove- dismount- powder coat- balance / remount and road test . I’m sure if I just brought the rims it would be cheaper.
Leave as is- paint - powder coat - new rims ???

Honestly, 2-2 1/2 days isn't bad at all. I had parts for my Corvette at my powder coater for 3-4 weeks. It was just a toy, so it didn't really make much difference. I guess it also depends on whether or not your car is a daily driver. Not sure that you'll find new rims for $800. If it were me, I'd lean more towards the powder coating if your car is only going to be down a couple of days. Ultimately, the choice is yours. Good luck. :like:

After looking at powder coating, price and my daily driver would be tied up for 3 days; cost and my time made my decision easier.
I went with dealer installed Ford bronze rims.
New wheels look great. :like:
