I obtained an estimate for the installation of a Roush Phase 2 SC on my 2024 Dark Horse and they are strongly recommending that I also have them install billet oil pump gears in place of the stock cast iron ones. The additional parts and labor total over $1500. Is this really necessary??

it really comes down to if you think the possible insurance is worth it.

on one hand, it could save you from spending tons of money on a new engine if your stock OPG fails, and may balance out the cost. the billet gears are just factually stronger than the factory cast ones, and there is no arguing that. plus, many people swear by billet OPGs.

on the other hand, remember that the way a couple shops (at least on YT) will test the OPG strength is by dropping it, which is a terrible metric. there's also the fact that the GT350's Voodoo engine, which had a redline of 8250 and output of 526hp, uses cast OPGs as well, and there are few if any failures. finally, Whipple and Ford Performance's stage one kits come with a warranty, but no oil pump gears, and that kit makes as much power and 10 lb-ft more torque than the Roush Stage 2. they have every reason to upsell you their own billet gears but they dont.

with that information in mind, the choice is up to you, and i also encourage you to do your own research as well. just dont get blindly tracked onto one side or the other

Wow, OP, you have gotten a great response from roket above.

I know nothing about OPGs or the need for them, but I do know a reasoned and thoughtful response when I see one. Altogether different from just a biased opinion. I’m impressed.

I personally did not and will not do OPGs … they’re not a perfect solution as there is a particular brand that causes lower oil pressure issues etc…

I would take the OPG money and save it towards an aluminator short block… then do OPGS..

Don’t hold the car on the rev limiter and it will never be a problem, you have to try to break them by driving like a caveman.

You may want to change out your half shafts if you plan on drag racing the car. The drivers side seems to snap on a hard launch. Next would be the 2 piece driveshaft.

Thank you for all of the helpful comments. I've decided not to change the OPGs. My track days are over now so no need to swap out the half shafts either. I've had supercharged cars before and I just want the added torque and power for occasional "spirited" driving so I'm sure that the Horse will be able to handle the Roush Phase 2.
