Microfiber towel care, specifically microfiber detergents, is a topic I recently had a little rant about another forum. To set the scene, a couple of guys were carrying on about how drying aids ruin expensive towels because they set up in the fibers and make them hydrophobic. This is a topic that comes up a lot, and one that I have tried to explain multiple times, hence my "tone" in the below responses...................................

This was my reply -

"One of the first things I learnt when I landed on this forum was Mike's "Clean, Dirty Bucket" concept. As in, a clean bucket used to hold "dirty" (ie used) towels. After each detailing session, that bucket goes inside and straight into the washing machine. In effect, it's a laundry basket. If for some reason I can't get them in straight away, the gamma seal lid prevents the towels drying out too quickly, then setting up any sealant products used."

S650 Mustang This Just Got Real! IMG_4458

Then the concern shifted to ruining the towel because of mold. My response -

"You do run that risk, but I'm not talking about storing them like that for days, weeks.

Personally, I think most people who get into problems with their towels going hydrophobic is from a lack of prompt washing. As in, they leave the towels in a pile for days, then blame whatever spray sealant they used for ruining the towel.

As I said in the post, having the lid helps prevent the towels from drying while you are still working, in theory preventing the products from setting up in the towel. I also think those not using a modern dedicated MF detergent are contributing to poor towel performance. Modern detailing products are better targeted by these detergents compared to just using normal clothes washing liquid."

Then the complaint that dedicated microfiber detergents were overpriced hype, that something like Free and Clear laundry liquid was cheaper and still effective. My response -

"My comment in regard to using dedicated microfiber detergents was based around the fact normal washing detergents like Free & Clear do not have the ability to remove modern detailing chemicals such as polishes, Si02 sprays and polymer sealants.

As I said, people who complain about hydrophobic towels are experiencing this because of not using the right detergent. You can whine about the price, but the results speak for themselves. When I made the switch, I revived all of my older towels that were on the verge of being thrown away.

So, what's more expensive? Buying a dedicated detergent every now and then, or replacing expensive towels because they become hydrophobic from improper washing?"

Which then led to one of them posting this -

My towels are not hydrophobic and I use products with SI02 on a regular basis. Also occasionally polishes and waxes.

Of course Griots is going to say their laundry detergent gets out stuff that free and clear can't. They are in the business of selling special microfiber detergent. They have to say something so people will buy it. Can anyone tell me exactly what chemicals are in the dedicated microfiber detergent that justifies using the special detergent and supports the claim of getting out the products that free and clear cannot which is claimed by those selling the dedicated microfiber detergents?

Arm and Hammer, free and clear $14.97 for 105 fluid oz.

Rags to Riches $20.60 + shipping for 32 fluid oz. So might as well call it $30.00 for 32 oz.

Obviously nobody is changing anyone's mind with this information. But I'm good with my method. I also use 8 oz. of white vinegar in the rinse cycle which also takes care of anything still remaining in the towels, The vinegar is $3.00-$4.00 per gallon. Just because a certain product costs more does not necessarily make that product better and that analogy is very prominent with detailing products.

Hype is the name of the game
with many detailing products. Always has been and probably always will be.
What I found interesting here was the claim that Free and Clear (or similar) was just as good at removing detailing products as the overpriced stuff, "just because a certain product costs more does not necessarily make that product better". And yet, its obviously not as effective when you then have to add another chemical (white vinegar) to get the job done.

In another thread, the same guy went on to explain a convoluted towel washing process, waaay over complicated. For me, I use one single product, no additives required. For a small load, you only need 30ml of the stuff, 60ml for a large load, about 0.87c to $1.73 per load. If you can't afford that, way way less than a new drying towel.

But what would I know, I'm just a hype train.

What I do if I know I can't wash them straight away, is put them in a bucket with some water and detergent and just leave them to soak. Then a day or so later I'll pop them in the machine when I have time.

Simply huh. The way those guys were carrying on, you'd think the towels cost them their life savings and paying the extra for the correct detergent was just too much to bare.

My routine of late has been to get a few things done in the morning, then jump in a car and go for a drive in the afternoon. Yesterday I picked up a GoPro head mount strap and was keen to get some footage of the new Mustang, nothing crazy, just a cruise and maybe a little squirt to showcase the sound of the engine.

I took several small videos, inspected the footage of the one I thought was the best and came home satisfied. After I uploaded the videos, non are them are usable. The camera was angled too high as I rested against the headrest, so the view of the gauges is limited to a slither at the bottom of the shot, the rest a view out the window and the headliner. With how the camera sits on your head, despite checking in the vanity mirror, it's hard to see the viewing screen to check your angles.

But that's video, for me anyway as I fumble my way around this new medium. I will reshoot the videos tomorrow, with a repositioned camera. If there is some consolation, the car looked and sounded great on camera.

Being a freelancer, sometimes with weeks of nothing, my routine is all too often pissing away the morning on the internet, and then it's a mad scramble from 14:00 onwards to try and achieve something for the day. :giggle:

I was going to message you off forum, but as you brought it up...
Your FG Falcon XR6 POV video had the perfect viewing angle. :like:
I was going to ask where you mounted the camera.
It seemed too low for a head mount (unless you were sitting uncomfortably lower than normal, and too high for a chest mount.
Intrigued!

I'd be surprised if GoPro didn't have an app.
(I have a DJI Action 4, can't speak for GoPro).
Camera connects to phone using its 2.4GHz wifi.

Live view in the app can be useful for checking composition etc.
(In fact, it just occurred to me... why didn't I use the app the other when the camera was placed under the car to capture the DIYVan patch kit. It was damn awkward under there.)

A picture is worth 1,000 words.

Aside from checking framing, you can change the settings.
Not sure if you're Android or iOS, but check for a GoPro app that does this.

You can mount the camera, reach for your phone and check/start recording from there.
Put phone back down again.

Wow wow wow, thanks soooo much! I installed the GoPro App when I bought the camera and haven't used it since. Yes, it has live view! This will be an immense help! :like:

As for camera mountings, in the first video below, I use a window mounted suction cup. This is far easier to get a good placement on a Falcon compared the shallow window line on the Mustang.

For the POV video below, I have been using a clip attached to a cap, something I gleaned from a Youtuber who does this for a living. It works, but it just feels unnatural.

S650 Mustang This Just Got Real! IMG-2924

Yesterday I went and bought the GoPro head mount strap, which is what I used today. This feels more manageable to wear, but obviously didn't deliver the result I was hoping for. I need to mess around with a different angle, I have an extender fitted to give more adjustability, or I may have to look into the GoPro Swivel Mount.

As I said, I very much appreciate the guidance you are providing. I'm the sort of person who gets bugged by things not being just so. The videos I made today would be fine for most, but they don't meet my standards. I'm at the trial-and-error stage at the moment, I want to get good at this.

Today was wash number four, and the second since the coatings went down on the paint and wheels.

A little post wash rinsing action for you....................

Wise Guy was again used on the tyres, but I switched to Carpro Reset for the wheels and paint. Drying aid was also ADS Amplify, switching to ECH20 for the door jambs and engine bay. With the hood vent on this car, I've found there is a lot of extra water to mop up in the engine bay after washing. Amplify also went on the wheels before dressing the Michelin's with OG Tire Dressing. The interior only needed a wipe over with a damp towel, then a quick vac of the carpet mats. Invisible Glass for the windows.

While I have ordered a new one, it's interesting to note that the S550 cover will fit the S650 to perfection. This particular one is the CoverCraft FormFit, which I got while they still had an Australian agent.

The new one I have ordered from Purefit, who were actually the old CoverCraft agent, so the new ones are virtually the same thing. I will say though, the Purefit website is woeful with several bugs, and even after contacting them, the owner clearly doesn't notice these bugs. So, be careful when ordering.

I know that it's a trivial complaint, and an area of the car no one other than me ever looks at, but the missing strut tower brace badge is annoying me. Mainly because they left the rivet holes in place, which in turn makes the engine bay look unfinished.

I know Anchor Room offer a solution, but they are too expensive to import for what they are, and ideally, I want the OEM part. Also, it doesn't seem Ford sell the plates separately, so the only solution I see would be to buy an actual strut tower brace. But again, that's not really a financially practical option either.

Super annoying, as I said, the engine bay looks like something is missing without it.

I agree with you. Its one of the first things I checked on my DH. If it was missing I would have had to do something about it for sure.

Hey DFB, What is the o/a distance of the two outside holes? & What is the maximum width of the flat area of the brace that we can work with? I am looking at aftermarket plate options to cover these holes that may suffice.

D, plates available on an ebay store.

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/323340447966?

Considering they're in Portsmouth VA, it must be Anchor Room.
Search their store, as they appear to have a few to choose from.

You're looking at ~ AUD $95 posted to Australia.
Not sure if this is cheaper than from their own website, and if this is worth it to you.

On the other hand, it was a nice surprise for us to get the brace to begin with.
That would have been a significantly more expensive aftermarket purchase instead.

I have to say, I'm getting tired of chasing stuff for this car that's either not offered here, is too expensive to import, or sold by local retailers who seem to be price gouging.

I took I liking to the 2024 Rouch Intake upgrade. I mean, it might provide a small power bump, but I just like the way it looks.

S650 Mustang This Just Got Real! {filename}

S650 Mustang This Just Got Real! {filename}

I first spotted it being offered by Tickford, but they don't publish a price, only a "Get A Quote" section. Well, I filled out a quote request three weeks ago and haven't heard anything back. Clearly, they don't want my money.

MY24+ ROUSH Air Intake System | Ford S650 Mustang GT (MY24+) | Tickford Performance Australia

S650 Mustang This Just Got Real! rcai104

I then notice Mustang Motorsport have it listed on their site now too...................................at $1200! 😡

Roush 2024+ Mustang 5.0L V8 Air Intake System

I mean, come on, $1200 for two air filters and two plastic lids. The same thing from the Roush website sits at $550 USD, which roughly converts to $855 AUD. I do realise there are importation and tax costs, but an extra $345? Even still, $855 is ridiculous.

A set of similar oiled K&N filters tops out at $200 or so, and the aFe Dry Flow versions are $320. Are those clear plastic lids really worth $880 - $1000 for the pair?

K&N Filters E-0630 Replacement Air Filter | Automotive Superstore | Shop Online
aFe 10-10407DM aFe 2024 Ford Mustang GT / 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse Magnum FLOW Pro Dry S Replace

And that's before looking at the wider aftermarket for S650 in Australia, its pathetic! Everything is overpriced and most of it lacks a product picture. How is someone supposed to buy something without even seeing it? Just seems like these places have no interest in selling anything. I also wonder why the Ford Performance catalog offering is so limited here. And then you have businesses crying poor, that the retail market has crashed, people aren't spending money. No bloody wonder.

I know, first world problems. In no way is this affecting my enjoyment of the car, but rather a frustration linked to it.
