Building that relationship to where you're talking about everything but the car you're about to buy is what's fun. Getting to know their wife, kids, family, etc...

Spent an hour on the phone yesterday with a long time customer talking about my daughter graduating highschool and his son finishing up his first year in college. Almost forgot to tell me to order the mustang convertible for his wife we've been working on for a month 😂.
While we normally go pick up our new vehicles, our salesman offered to drop off one of my wife's new MKZ's about 8-9 years ago.

As a joke, we cut his picture out of the newspaper (the auto dealerships around here publish big ads with some of the salespersons's pictures in them), put the picture in a photo frame, and then put that picture frame right in the middle of a bunch of picture frames that had pics of our kids and other family members. When he stopped by to deliver the car, he saw the picture in the middle of all the other family pics, and busted out laughing like crazy.

I didn't say I think they care about me, maybe try some reading comprehension. Both parties are trying to get the best deal possible. I just don't think they are terrible like you say. Maybe you've had more bad experiences than me, I don't know you. I've gone back to the same dealership for every Ford I've bought over the last 16 years. I walked away happy each time, always paid under MSRP. That includes my '24 GT and '19 GT350.

maybe try some reading comprehension yourself with a little context????? i said " they dont care about you, don’t kid yourself. they make you believe they care and develop a friendship to control the deal" that meant anybody! not you individually! its general sales tactics 101

@Jdio slightly off topic, but between the Cobra, GT350, and now the S650, how has your experience been between all three of them?

gt350 had a little more hp in higher rpms but it didn't ride or as good as my 2022 mach 1 with the handling package was my favorite of all! Now that ive driven the s650 with performance pack and magnaride 10speed auto for a while, its by far the funnest to drive in manual mode! if that makes sense....

You gotta do what you gotta do. 😁

I was 13, went with my dad to buy my mom a new car, we were there for 9 hours, it was miserable. He was a big believer in the tactic of, "whoever talks first in negotiations, loses". Hour 8, he was making them take off the aluminum wheels and putting on steel wheels with hubcaps to save $400.00, the salesman was at his whits end, I was eating the last of their popcorn from their popcorn machine. He looks at at me and says, "Got 'em where I want them". I told him, "this is the worst day of my life, never again". 😂

I feel sorry for your friends/family who get talked into going with you. I know their pain, hahahahaha
great story. Sorry man. That does sound miserable. BUT AT LEAST YOUR DAD WAS HAPPY? LOL

thankfully my fam is is all in on supporting each other through thick and thin. And my dad doesn’t give a rip what anyone thinks about him so long as he gets what he wants. Plus he gets a kick out of the whole thing for reason only know to him and God. So he’s a mainstay of the car buying gauntlet.

that’s the thing.
Every so often you’ll run across an honest to goodness decent person who not only wants to make a sale, but also help you out for a win-win.

but more often than not, you get burned for being the nice guy. I’ve had my share in my 20s and early 30s with a few new vehicles and that taught me a lot.

In sales, you’re taught to “build a relationship” with the customer so that they like you and trust you. It gets all personal, etc. but to them it’s just a tactic. It’s ignorant to think anything else

So better to put in a bit of work (which usually amounts to a day or two at most band some phone time) and get a great deal on something

you’re spending a ton of money on over quite a long time (if financing). You’ll be sble to tell what kind of people you’re dealing with (especially if you brought family or friends).

You don’t owe them everything. They’re not the ones paying. You are. It’s a business transaction at the end of the day. You’re not going there to set up thanksgiving plans. You’re spending many thousands of your hard earned dollars on a product. All they have to do is charge a fair price and give you a deal. It’s not that hard. But most dealers would try their best to make you believe it is.

it’s great if you can find an honest dealer, build an honest relationship and have them over for thanksgiving. Or drop off their groceries for them or whatever. But that’s rare.

If you don’t happen to find one of those types who will bend over backward to get you a good deal, try the 3 dealer system. And get a deal you can be happy with for the number of years you’ll be paying on the thing. Getting a great price isn’t rude, or ignorant, or whatever. It’s the responsible grown up thing to do. Any honest dealer knows this and would respect you for it. If they are acting all disrespected or whatever, then it’s time to move to the next.

don’t be the sucker they brag about overselling to at the next staff meeting.

don't mess with him. He wants to pay MSRP or ADM and then be hurt when other people know how to work a car deal. people like that make it easier for smart buyers to get a deal because the dealers make so much from those who just pay the asking price.

I may walk away from my purchase. I have a feeling there will be some smoking deals soon. Especially regarding financing with subsidized rates and better residuals in leases.

Better financing than 1.9, 2.9 or 3.9? I doubt that. And deals on MSRP? They are already at about 10% off, sometimes a little more. How much better do you think it may get?

I think they will get better than that. I want to lease and I am hoping the base rate and residual will get better. Its sad when I can lease a new BMW M2 a car that MSRPs 10K more than the Mustang I have on order and the payment is within $50.00.

They haven't had a decent lease on a GT since pre-covid. Don't think they want to flood the market with a bunch of GT's. Will make their resale value drop worse than they already are, haha. Foreign manufacturers have always had better leases.

the best way to hedge your position on pricing is to join MCA for $35 wait 90 days and you can get a X plan number

With X plan it is 99.4% of invoice, and a iirc $275 plan fee, and the Doc fee the dealer can charge you is limited to something very reasonable.

Plus you get any incentives, rebates, or financing specials.

So you can try to cut your best deal which may or may not be better than X plan, ask to see the invoice and the X plan price will be clearly marked.

Since the pricing for 2024's were posted online with MSRP and invoice prices it was easy for me to figure out what the X Plan price s going to be. When I go to the dealer I'll see what they offer and then decide which way is better for my wallet.

That is assuming I ever get a production date from Ford for my car that was ordered on 4.17.22
