I been running Ethanol Free 87 this week since too cold for tracks to open this weekend.

Here's screen shots from from a 30min log this morning, Figured I'd log it and see what the knock looks like after the LT install.

It was in the low 20's for this run and IAT's were running about 30 ....

1st thing too notice is there's a lot of steady speed knock with the cruise set at 75. Never felt anything though.

I did romp it couple times ...

I have to say I was surprised to see light knock at the beginning of those hits and then it cleared. PCM actually dialed in 27.5degrees of timing from that stop light hit.
I never felt or heard any knock.

My wife runs 87 e10 only in her 21' M6 [ I think she'd have a seizure if she had to run 93 ] and when I drive it and romp on it I can feel it knock and get a flashing CEL from misfires.

I rarely drive that car.

It is impressive the amount of timing the S650 is dialing up on 87 IMVHO ....

I use my car in winter too in New York. Salt everywhere post snow. It’s all over my car right now. I’ll go wash it tomorrow. People bug out over salt, and honestly, new cars are better for rust prevention. My car wash using rust inhibitor for the undercarriage and it sprays it down good so I have no concerns. My concern is I’m still on my factory summer tires in 14° weather… but honestly it still drives really well. Oddly enough.

We're in the fuzz at this point.

These things hurt gear heads, but it is reality: One, if you want to go fast, higher octane is needed due to the energy contained there in. And number two are automatics! They can shift in less time than humans can even grasp the need to do so.
Alan,
I wanted the manual but couldn't find one for a price I was willing to pay. I decided between the 10 gears and paddles I could create my own fun. I am not at all disappointed in the auto and you are correct you don't even have to think about shifting. Just hang on! Glenn

So0_NaSTy,
I said in another post that I drove my 350Z year round, 39 month lease, without changing tires. As long as you respect the weather and road conditions, it is doable. And I had a 50 minute commute to work. Glenn

Interesting! You didn’t notice cracking due to the freezing temperatures? I’m honestly not having an issue regarding traction at all. Even doing small pulls now and then honestly. I’m just worried when summer does hit the tires will already be toast

So0_NaSTy,
The only problem I ever had was "feathering." That was an uneven wear in the tires which you could feel if you rubbed your hand backwards against the tread. It was a big problem with the 350Z. Nissan never figured it out and replaced the tires 4 times. My local mechanic got some fancy alignment machine and finally proved the alignment was bad. Nissan's machine said there was nothing wrong. At least the last six months were trouble free. Since my tires were never on the car very long, I never noticed any cracking or other issues. Glenn

Interesting. Seems like an alignment issue, not a winter cold issue. I’ll keep an eye out, I’ll see if I need to spend the money on all season. Thanks

Quick Update, Logged a tank of BP93 earlier this week, Still seeing some steady speed knock, but it's much reduced over the 87.

And logged a tank of E40 from Sheetz today, 8g E80 cut with 8g Sheetz 93. I figure that's equivalent to 96Octane.

Log shows Zero Steady Speed Knock. Which I expected since I've seen very little knock on ethanol blends <E30 I've logged over the months.

Awesome, very cool of you to do some logs, and hopefully this puts it to bed for some people (probably not though)

I'm still in the middle of my month-long test (although I am going to end it). I was trying soooo hard to see a difference in anything. But, I'm on my third tank of 93 and there is zero, zero, zero difference in anything I can feel or detect.

So... I gave it a good try, but nothing will change my mind:
  • I'm not racing and even if you get a tiny bit more horsepower with 93, I will never see it or feel it or sense it in any way.
  • 87 is NOT hurting my engine... if there is knock, the knock sensors are doing their job. My two previous Mustangs with 100,000+ miles using 87 prove this.
My conclusion: I might as well literally throw away $12-$15 into the trash each week. So, I'll save my $50 a month for cool mods! :)

Car & Driver did a study back in 2019, which may or may not still be relevant today, as cars and gasoline have changed considerably since then. But, even back in 2019, the findings were impressive and supported the notion......higher octane is better.
