Use the 5.4 out of the Mustang GT3 (as they already have it) and call it Boss 329. Ford should have used this name for its GT3 Mustang from the beginning of racing the S650. Having a direct line of nomenclature between racing and what the consumer can buy is marketing gold.

Conversely Ford could have called their next higher performance Mustang a GT3 but they messed that up when they named the GTD.

I suppose what they have left is to release a street version of the Dark Horse R, but imo that's a bit weak sauce like a modern Iroc-Z.

From what I have read from a Ford press release they have patented the Boss name in Europe and called it the
"Boss Darkhorse"

The Dark Horse R is a stripped down race car not a lot of changes made to it that would work in a street version. I definitely agree about using the 5.4 but I think that’s only used in Australia currently

Just saw this on FB w/ a comment that said it would be revealed on Thurs Jan 23rd. Don't know if it's Ford, Shelby American or total BS:

I like the Dark Horse but hate the name.... I mean if you are going to get rid of Boss/ Cobra exc. you might as well get rid of the Mustang name also?

They want to move the car forward but also want to keep the oldest name "Mustang" oh ....and they also added retro guages trying to tie back to the older cars...but they also say its time to move forward?.....I think they are confused....

Getting rid of those names to me is the equivalent of Ferarri saying you know......lets move the brand forward and stop painting our cars red......
Since the Mustang name has continued uninterrupted to the present, younger generations know what a Mustang is, even if only S550 and newer. Mach 1, Bullitt, and Boss are primarily associated with the 60s and early 70s, which is a long long time ago. When the S650 was introduced, fox body gauges were publicized as a cool nostalgic touch because, no need to go further back than that. The retro gauges must have been to toss one last little bone to the geezers. :)

How about a BULLITT? Offer an A-10 and a 6-Speed and better rear gears. And make sure the wheels aren't black!
Some paint and badges and you have a piece of history.
At least this is something that's unique.
The Mach 1 and Dark Horse are the Bullitt Mustang's continuation series

The recent Mach 1 cars were definitely Bullitt cars with more color options, and IIRC you could get an automatic where all the Bullitt cars were sticks.

For some reason the Mach 1 name didn't sell well, so Ford drew a new logo to go with a new name and the same people that shunned the Mach 1 couldn't get deposits down on the DH fast enough.

Bullitt is a trademarked/copyrighted name owned by whomever owns it these days

That is why it is only done every few years on an anniversary of the movie or something, every car that comes out with Bullitt anything on it costs them a licensing fee.

If you have any love for the 67 Mustang Bullitt car you are either old like me and remember the movie and the car, or you are a nostalgic gearhead.

Wait I just described most S650 owners.

Not really. The Mach 1 and Dark Horse are much more track focused with additional cooling for the engine, transmission, and differential, as well as the handling packages. The Bullitt had none of that.

For some reason the Mach 1 name didn't sell well....
I wonder if people wanted the Mach 1 to be a Bullitt in different colors with a shaker hood, and didn't want to pay extra for the track bits. At the same time, customers interested in a track car didn't want to pay extra for premium options.

Im going to say .....the problem with the Mach 1 was that it followed the GT350...... not that there is anything wrong with the Mach 1 - I love me a Mach 1 HP car in Eruption Green......

I also wouldnt get too crazy on saying the people are lining up the door for the Dark Horse either- same thing...make mine a grabber Blue with handling pack and recaros please - but the bottom line is you can get one for under sticker now .....

During the entire run of the 350 and 500- you could never get one under sticker or if you did it was extremely rare......

but it all comes at a cost- out of warranty there are some VERY expensive parts that can break on the 350 and 500 .....but on the Mach 1 and Dark Horse.....relatively much less money if you have a catastrophic failure....

My car is under warranty until June of 2027 - still yet to be determined if I will sell it with a year warranty left and end up with a Mach 1 or Dark Horse in my driveway- or whatever else Ford may offer then.... I may go C8 Z06 as well.... just depends on what college the kids get into lol

If I owned a Mach 1 or Dark Horse- I wouldnt think twice about owning one outside of warranty.....would be very comfortable with it....my car not so much .....

Yep. They seem to all went to elementary in the 60s. High school in the 70s. Probably blast My Sharona on the system, and are blown away by the opening drums of the song on their B&O subwoofer. And would never dream of listening to Disco, or be caught listening to it in their Stang. Plus these S650s have a slight resemblance to a 911.

not sure if serious or sarcasm???
Not being sarcastic. Lots of us who purchase these cars grew up in that era. The cars the kids have today are nothing compared to what people had in school. From Mustangs to 440 Hemis.

Oh I meant about the Mustang looking like a 911 .....

But while not quite old man status......turning 50 next month..... I bought and sold muscle cars to pay my way through school - just sold my 67 Shelby GT500 a few years ago...

Also just sold my 56 Ford Victoria with a built 428CJ

Other past cars include 70 Boss 302/ Mach 1 R code Drag Packs/ 66 GT350H/ 69 RS Z28 complete with DZ302 / 70 LS6 Chevelle / 440 Cuda....the list goes on and on and on and on and on....

Yeah they are not as fast as todays cars....but a HELL of alot more scarier!!
