Hi everyone, I’ve recently noticed some paint issues on the trunk lid of my Mustang, and I’m not sure how to handle them. This is my first car, so I’d really appreciate any advice from the group.

Here’s what’s happening:
  • I initially noticed one paint defect on the trunk lid, but over time, it has grown, and now I have three spots showing the same issue.
  • I’ve attached a photo (and videos if needed) to show the problem.
  • I visited a local shop where I had my front PPF done, but they weren’t sure what caused these issues or how to fix them.
Could anyone help me with the following?
  • What are these issues called? (Are they chips, cracks, peeling, or something else?)
  • What could have caused this?
  • Any suggestions for how to fix it or prevent more damage in the future?
Should I reach out to the dealership about this, or is there another route you’d recommend? Thanks so much for your help!

Hi there. I'd like to take a closer look at your paint concerns on my end. To get started, can you please send over a message with your VIN and estimated mileage?

I have a couple paint issues. One looks to be some debris under the paint by the trunk and one sloppy weld that was painted over next to the windshield. The dealer is scheduling an appointment to get it fixed with a bodyshop since they do not have their own. It will all be covered under warranty.

Go to the dealer and get it fixed it should be covered.

Thanks for the reply man. Good luck on the repair. I will send it to the dealership when I am scheduled to be out of town. I have been reluntant to do so since now because it seems like those defects are showing up one by one with time and it is just such a hassel to send it to the dealership every single time.

I also noticed a deep scar(about 2 inch long) near the fuel tank gap area. My detailer said it is very deep and someone probably damaged it and sand it before I take delivery. But I was too excited for my first car and didn't insepct it thorough enough. Lessons learned:)

Where is this spot on your car? I can't really tell fom the pic but if it is this new, might as well let the dealer know about this issue and see what their solutions are. If they are just going to fix this one spot, then I'd wait for a few week to see if there are more defects like this coming up on the same panel. Hopefully they just treat the entire panel to prevent future problems tho.

It is on the rear of the trunk. Dealer is already tracking it. Because the car is less than 3 weeks old and less than 350 miles it has to go through a pre-approval process.

Hi! Could that be some bird droppings? It looks identical to some stains I got ok my car. Those things are very acid, and If you leave them on the paint for too long (during an hot summer one day under the sun would be enough) it will penetrate the clear coat and even if you wash it, it will leave a transparent-like stain that you wont be able to remove no matter how hard you try to scratch it off.
The good news is that usually it goes away with some paint correction, a good detailer will deal with that in a few minutes.

Thx for the input man! Now that I think about it, this might actually be the reason. There are always some birds flying in our apartment garage for some odd reasons and that might be it! I just didn't think about this at all as my friends cars that are parked right next to mine don't have this issue at all. Maybe it is just the paint being too thin/weak? I mean...... Even my roomate's 15 year-old Infiniti can handle these no problem, and he washes his car every 6 month:cwl:
