somehow the Camaro figured it out (how to be significantly lighter). And ford has better engineers. They just have to WANT to.
The mustang needs a new platform. While the new charger is mostly a miss, the one thing it got right imo was offering a platform that can accommodate gas, fulls EVs, and I suspect hybrids as well. Ford should develop a new platform for the mustang that does something similar. One which can handle v8s, EVs, and everything in between. Such a platform would essentially "future proof" the mustang against any changes in government policy and consumer preferences.

One of the best ways to save weight would be to chop down those overhangs, never liked how mustangs always seemed to have longer overhangs. A longer wheelbase to overall length ratio would make the car look more modern and attractive imo. The gt3 race car is actually the direction proportionally that I want the mustang to do. Slightly lower, more elegant wheelbase, longer dash to axle ratio, etc. If the next mustang had side profile proportions like that I'd be like "hell yeah".

lol. We are in agreement. The 70s. SUCKED. The 90s jelly bean stuff was absolute trash. I do think the 97-93 Fox was pretty sweet though.

I was never a fan of s197 and no it doesn’t look as “good” as thst sketch. But the sketch does look like a cartoon/caricature version of the s197 with some s550 mixed in. That’s a backward step even from the current design.
So you didn't like the 70s, the 90s, the s197, and the s650... No wonder you don't like a four door mustang, you don't like any mustang lol Do you own one?

Tell me what you want to sacrifice.
Bigger brakes?
beefier motors?
The number of gears in your transmission?
the steel oil pan?
Gas Struts for a prop rod?
Power Seats?
Safety?

The Camaro used a steel and aluminum chassis in their vehicle, while the Mustang chassis is steel The S550 had aluminum fenders and quarter panels IIRC, the S650 has steel for safety and insurance reasons.

The Camaro was not nearly as refined as the Mustang is. The interior was slightly better than an econobox and the seats felt cheap.

Lets look at it one other way. With the way mustangs are not selling, Ford has no reason to put these "better engineers" anywhere near a new generation. There simply isn't enough sales to warrant it.

Ford has sold just over 30k 2024 Mustangs...compared to 122k of the first year of the 6th gen.

This is pathetic and Ford is probably looking for reasons to justify to the board the need to KEEP the Mustang and not cancel it outright. It certainly does not have the incentive to do a complete re-design unless it finds something to to a major parts share with that can drive sales back above 100k units a year.

Remember, they killed the Thunderbird because of sagging sales and it was a car that was selling between 75 and 130k unit a year the last generation.
I understand the drop in sales but It’s always funny to me how 30k is considered low, when the Supra cranks out a small portion of that. Mustang almost outsells whole performance car lineups from other companies. 😂

I don’t think they’re thinking about killing it off like that. They know it’s their flagship and understand its importance, but they need to make better decisions.

We can definitely agree on that. Jim wants to lean more in the “sports car” side of the Mustang ethos, and if he wants to do that, a new chassis would do wonders. Obviously we’re a ways out so s650 is essentially the new generation “SN95” as far as timelines are concerned.

The ford plant makes only mustangs

the plant where the supras are made also makes many other cars

Mercedes-Benz G-Class, Jaguar models I-PACE and E-PACE, the BMW 5 Series, the BMW Z4 and the Toyota GR Supra

Yeah I know I’m just saying sometimes I have to put things back into context whenever I see numbers.

or look at it the reality way - the Mustang is selling the way it is (decent for a pony car - and yet better than the Mach e suv) BECAUSE Ford hasn’t put its best engineers on the job.

it’s just the s550 with more glitter painted on.

Everyone knows this. And yet Ford is charging GT350 money for GTs and GT500 money for a naturally aspirated Dark Horse that isn’t all that.

don’t give me that drivel.
If Chevy can put the effort into the niche corvette thst it is, Ford can do one better for the freaking Mustang.

and that includes making it lighter. Chevy WANTED lighter cars… so it MADE lighter cars. Ford didn’t care. So it got heavier.

you don’t have to sacrifice anything other than some actual care from Ford brass+engineers to get it done.

which is why:

1) Ford should make cats agsin
2) ford should develop a next gen platform for these cars that is lighter and more rigid
3) multiple cars with distinct identities can share the same platform.

ford put the mustang in a tough spot when it decided to up and cancel cars. And then they just expected everyone to roll with that decision and then they were shocked when the world rebelled against turning the mustang into an suv. Heck they even had an suv platform they were going to put this generation mustang on.

so again - if ford wants to make a 4 door performance car, that’s great. But there’s zero reason to call it a mustang. The s297 was based on d2c, the Fox also shared its platform with other cars.

the mustang is an icon with a distinct image and identity. It should move forward as it has done at various times, but not turn into something different.

Ooh, let's call the Mach-4 the "Meowstang" instead of "Mustang", then both the purists and the pro-sedan peeps can all be happy! PROBLEM SOLVED! 😖

(Sorry, I couldn't resist. This is clearly a joke!)

So, recently I read an article stating that Ford Performance has a performance tune for the 3.0L Ecoboost that pushes power to 455hp and 536lb-ft of torque. To me, that is more of a muscle car than the 5.0L V8, which even with 500hp pushes only 418lb-ft of torque. Honestly, if Ford took that and put that in the Mach-4 and then put a 3.0L Hybrid with that kind of tune in the same car, the Mach-4 would fly and would be a batter car than any N/A mustang ever was.

performsnce tuned turbo offers less hp and a more torque.

and sounds like farts.

no thanks.

now imagine ford offering a performance tune for a turbo 5.0.

THATs a muscle car.

There was a lot of rumors back in 2020ish about ford using the 3.0 in some test mules, a Mustang ST that’s 45k that’s in between the Ecoboost and GT would do really well. The 4 door Mustang had also been rumored for years and i mean years, it’s rumored to be on the explorers CD6 platform. I hate the idea of it but if they pull a Ferrari FF or something of that akin, well it could be cool we will see
