Ironically a suv would sell better. What a time to be alive.
The reason is because many SUVs are approaching or at at what a performance sedan was 10 years ago. If the average person finds that to be thrilling enough, why would they go for more, when the vehicle can also haul the kids/grandkids to school/soccer/etc.

seriously, outside a few thrill seekers and motorheads, most people will never use their sub 4 second 0-60 times because they are not going to be racing (btw, street racing is stupid, donā€™t race where you can hurt others) and at that level of acceleration, you run out of speed limit way too quickly. Heck, I suspect that most people who be thrilled to have a 6-7 second 0-60 vehicle.

also, for the cost of a very fast pony car, you can get a faster electric that does more things..again, not MY preference, but it explains why SUV sales are higher these days.

I would not buy a SUV like vehicle. If I want a truck, I will use my F350. Both my wife and I love driving sedans.

So, no. A 4 door SUV "Mustang" would hold 0 interest for me, just like the Explorer ST holds no interest for me.
While i concur regarding proper tool for the job the comment was intended to hint toward the potential for acceptance of a supercharged small suv.

Would everyone complain if all of a sudden a supercharged mustang miniature suv showed up or are we stuck anticipating a stretched controversial coupe?
Doesn't excite me at all. If they made a SC Mustang SUV it would be a boring auto and $100k and not interested in such for a daily.

Same, the Explorer ST excites me zero wouldn't change my life if never made or discontinued.

You're not wrong. SUV's are hot these days, they just don't excite me. Maybe that's one appeal of the sedan as its different and doesn't look like every other piece of traffic on the street.

The answer is yes, people would complain. šŸ˜‚

I get what you were saying. Looking back on the stuff people were talking about, they wouldnā€™t apply the same logic from the sedan to the suv, even though it would be analogous.

Personally I've yet to find an SUV that's as compelling to drive as it looks and sounds. Doubly so for a sportback-styled SUV.

My $0.02/random thought stream:

I'm not intrinsically against a stretched 4-door Mustang. There has been talk of a 4-door variant about as long as there have been Mustangs. Much less "offensive" to me than the Mach E was, though I still get it. I'm not going to not buy a 2-door Mustang because you can suddenly get a 4-door version, or even a 4-door something else called a Mustang, though.

My one caveat is that they don't compromise the chassis/performance of the 2-door Mustang in order to make the 4-door.

If they're going to get into the sport sedan market, I agree w/others here that it only make sense from a cost perspective to stretch the S650 chassis and utilize as much Mustang components as practical. If you're going to do it, then actually make it a 4-door Mustang and build it on the same line using the same parts and options as the 2-door. Also already a huge aftermarket too. They will need to widen the back seat to fit 2 adults in relative comfort, at least for a short trip, and 3 smaller adults/teens functionally, not to mention head room. Hopefully pushing the rear wheels back would allow this w/out disproportionate performance compromise beyond the obvious.

If it's going to be a different chassis, then I agree it makes no sense to slap a pony badge on it beyond crass marketing. Bring back Torino, Falcon, etc. [Why did I just get a vision in my head of a Mustang Ranchero?!? :cwl:]. Though I'm skeptical that that would make financial sense for Ford.

I promised myself if they ever got rid of the manual transmission as an option I'd buy a "little sister" for my '06 GT the final year it was offered. The wife, however, may not be so keen on that. A 4-door variant with a 500hp 5.0 and a 6-speed, Performance package, and maybe even the FRPP/Whipple supercharger package would be much easier to sell her on & very tempting for me....

It make sense to me to go after the Dodge Charger market if you're going to do this; now may be the time.

I would think that a 4-door would subsidize the 2-door more than it would steal sales, though I'm no industry expert/insider. I suspect most of those who would chose the 4-door would be more likely to chose a 4-door of a different make than go w/the 2-door Mustang if that option wasn't available.

Well, that's it for now. Fire away if you think I'm crazy....

Yeah that seems like the thought process for those for it. Not crazy, some things donā€™t really make sense but itā€™s the same thing with the Mach E and its here.

The more I think about it, the more it just feels weird since there already was a performance sedan with legendary credentials. Well thatā€™s after I read the Autopian article about it. (The render was kinda ugly but I get the vision)

This will age me horribly but the Falcons I resonate with are from the 2000s/2010s. (Specifically the BA/BF and FG generations.)
Oh I agree the concept is terrible. I seen better concepts from AI. Lol but the content in there was spot on.

FG was cool, looked like the Fusionā€™s athletic brother. You can kind of paste that front fascia over the Mustang and get something different enough while still looking angry.

Edit:
I took some time and tried to cobble together some AI Falcon art based off of the S650. Threw in some black Mad Max/Raptor inspired ones too šŸ¤·šŸ½ā€ā™‚ļø

I'd surely be a buyer. First instinct is I'm not loving the widebody version. I'm not loving the flares, and I'm a ex widebody Charger owner.

Yeah I just tossed that in there since the article I posted had a funky render of a Mad Max styled Falcon. Basically a more realistic (and better) version of a Raptor/Mad Max/old rally inspired Falcon sedan using the most recent FGX Falcon and s650 design language.

I even did a render with the OG Falcon hood scoop from its Monte Carlo rally car days.

All renders look cool, I'm hoping the car comes to fruition and looks similar.

While a hint of mustang may be in the render i see more of a tempo fusion. The aggressive stance isnā€™t bad but just isnā€™t yelling mustang, yet.
