Good morning all,

The intent here is to share my experience with the @Mod Mustang Racing MMR oil cooler (that might be added to base GT cars). This is neither product review nor a how-to, and I will update as we get some drive time in. There are currently no instructions available from MMR, and while it’s mostly self-explanatory, reference material is always nice. That said, my install might be ā€œwrongā€ but it is currently functional. This is the ā€œraceā€ version, which is slightly more involved. I cannot comment on pros/cons for either option, that’s a pay grade higher than mine.

An item of concern is the residual material in the block; make sure you clear your components/lines of any debris:

You will replace some hardware and re-use other hardware (this depends on your preference and later, the addition of official instructions). Pictured are OEM bolts and their replacements, and separately an OEM clip that I removed to make things fit to my liking:

Swinging the alternator down provided the necessary room to access the 4th bolt on the OEM filter mount. There are 4 total bolts OEM, and 3 are used upon reassembly (I think-already foggy memory!):

MMR confirmed that this kit should ā€œfit.ā€ It was my experience, however, that modifications were required. The oil sensor is very cramped and I assume the wiring will prematurely wear but only time will tell. In my case, the alternator and new hardware DID NOT fit (out of the box). I used a large file to work some of the alternator casing (protrusion around fixed mounting nut). No big deal but be sure to mind your debris and keep the area protected while you take off material:

More photos/info to come whenever a day off comes around. You’ll need to cut some line and assemble AN fittings but they supplied goods are all quality, as you’d expect. I’ll be adding a separate oil pressure gauge with low-warning, which should tie into the filter housing, as an extra layer of security (never trust your own work šŸ™ƒ).

Update:
After some driving around, the cooler is working well. Temps are not drastically lower but that isn’t what we’re looking for. Temps are reasonably lower and seem to recover better when heat does become a concern. I think in cooler climates, the results will be even more pronounced. At this point, I am happy with the kit but I encourage you to gauge your own mechanical comfortability against the instructions whenever they become available. It is not a ā€œhardā€ install by any means but the oiling system doesn’t tolerate many mistakes 😁
In town seems to run generally cooler by about 10 degrees and that carries through the range. Temps recover more efficiently, until the whole damn thing is hot, and then we’re just stuck with general thermodynamics laws and time.

Interesting. I ended up adding the performance pack oil cooler on my non PP GT. Have you driven around to test and see how it compares to no oil cooler? What’s the temp difference?

I also still had the active grill shutters installed up until this project, and those came out at the same time this cooler went in - so while there’s no direct correlation, there’s a caveat to any temp improvements.

Did you leave the grill shutter motor plugged in? I unplugged mine and it threw a CEL. Appreciate the updates

I watched your video, it was very detailed!

I want to do it to my non PP GT, the temps are crazy hot right now.

Now that you have had it for a while now, how has it helped the temps?

Had some time to button things up today - running on zero hours of sleep, so it was inefficient. The shutters are REMOVED and the plug is CONNECTED. I am currently throwing a CEL, though it is for P0073 - ambient temp sensor. Maybe something was dislodged during grill install (i5-autohaus) but I do not think so. What code are you throwing?

Also unable to switch exhaust modes. Investigating battery/SOC issues now.

Only put a few miles on the cooler and temps are still high but maybe not AS high, and maybe more efficient drop - bearing in mind our ambient temps are 100+. Will provide a real review on the next day off.

I’m not sure what code I was throwing but I just unplugged the motor and that was the code plugged it back in and went away.
I think the ambient temp sensor was connected to the active grille shutters possibly. I know that sensor is somewhere in the lower grille passenger side. Keep us updated!

I grabbed an AEM X-series oil pressure gauge - criteria was: fast shipping and some sort of high/low alert. I don’t think it’s the best option but was able to Amazon Prime next-day, and it is so far a nice gauge. As the reviews state, the sensor and power wires are not long enough; I made them just barely work but will extend and tidy when things become permanent.
I haven’t committed to a mount yet - the intent was a temporary double sided tape mount but our dash/kick panel material does not like adhesive. It’s currently awaiting permanent mount but dangling from zip ties in an Amazon-ordered 52mm housingšŸ™ƒ

If we keep the car, I’ll consider a digital unit that captures multiple data.

The only hard part was getting the bolts back into the block without cross threading. I made a whole video on it

You will see little to no temp difference on the gauges because the oil temp is INFERRED so It’s a ā€œestimateā€ figured that out after I installed it. But it does work it’ll physically be cooler but won’t be a difference on the screens

Hello I have a few questions.

How do you get the alternator to move? I pulled the long bolt and the nut, but am having trouble identifying the tensioner. Do you need to remove the belt from the alternator pulley?

Where exactly did you file the alternator for clearance?

Does the oil sensor stay plugged in where it stays or does that need to go somewhere else? With the race fitting there isn't any provision to plug a sensor in.

I’m at work for a couple of days but will refresh my memory when I get back to the car. In the meantime, here’s a terrible image of where I needed to file: the lip that surrounds the nut fitting, where it ran into the MMR block.

I did remove the alternator belt and gingerly used a pry bar to jostle the alternator, if memory serves (that’s a big maybe these days).

I completely forget what I did with the sensor - will advise when I get home.

edit: I also added an aftermarket oil pressure gauge. The cooling ā€œmanifoldā€ that gets mounted behind the wheel liner has a 1/8th fitting/removable screw plug that works perfectly.
