MT82 - How are the shifts?

I am looking to place an order for a manual GT at some point. There were some early reviews commenting that the MT82 this time around shifts better than previous iterations with some issues of the clutch not coming back up quick enough when shifting fast. Now that some time has passed, how has the MT82 been treating you?

I honestly love it. I never had an S550 so I can't compare, but it's a rewarding experience.

Same as @rockstar B. First MT82, but shifts are crisp and keep getting better as it breaks in. Only 290 miles on the clock so far, but I absolutely love this transmission. That said, I've never driven the Tremec. I'm sure it's better, but the MT82 is satisfying in its own right.

Clutch is light and smooth. Easiest manual I've ever driven.

I agree with them both. My first MT82, second Mustang. Love the clutch and shifting. I hear the Tremec is better, and wish I had the option on the GT, but I'm glad this isn't what everyone used to say about the MT82. I've never been locked out, no high rev issues, nor had a problem with any gear.

My 10th Mustang and second MT-82. My first MT-82 was in a 2011 Mustang GT back in 2012. I beat the crap out of that transmission at the drag strip and on the street. I had a Barton shifter with AMSOIL fluid on/in it and other than being a little notchy when cold, I never had any problems out of the transmission. Not to say that there are not design issues with the MT-82 (just like any transmission), but I believe that a lot of issues with the MT-82 are results of drivers who are not as good at driving a manual as they think they are. Back in the day, there were issues with different Tremec variances as well. So, its not just the Getrag transmissions.
This new MT-82 feels a lot better initially than previous, IMHO. Time will tell with durability, though I would imagine that there will be less issues, regardless, due to the amount of automatics/ 10R80s being purchased nowadays versus the manual/ MT-82s. As for me, I have not been locked out of any gear or had any issues with this new MT-82. I do have a MGW shifter to add to it when I get time. I prefer the transmission mounted feel over the chassis mounted shifter.

Definitely agree with everyone here so far. I’m a long way from being a driving pro, but the shifts are short and smooth for me! It’s been about 10 years since I last drove a manual transmission and I feel like I didn’t skip a beat. I’ve been very impressed, and frankly a little surprised particularly since I had heard the same negative comments about the MT82.

So far so good. Feels a little smoother once warmed a tad. Haven’t been locked out nor had any clutch pedal return issues. Although both of those can be driver as well as equipment so difficult to say for sure at this point. Rev-matching and hill/auto hold are interesting settings (each with their own pro/cons) - suffice it to say, rev match is now off but hill hold is on. Not sure we’ve gotten used to the ‘extra - drive though brake’ but it does come in handy for those slight inclines where you suddenly notice you’re coasting/rolling..

First time yesterday driving a 24 performance pack GT. I have had three previous S550's. 15 GT performance pack, 17 GT350R and a 20 GT500 CFTP. Where there is no comparison between the MT 82 and Tremec, the 24 version of the MT is definitely much better than my 15 GT. Better shifting. Seemed smoother and tighter. Overall I was extremely impressed with the ride of the 24. The Tremec is just on another level. If get the chance to drive one with a Tremec, do so. Soon I will have a 24 GT performance pack and will do another build on it. Will more than likely put an aftermarket shifter on like I did on my 15. Looking forward to it. I've been driving manual mustangs since I got my 99 New Edge at 19. 1st MT-82 (correct me if I'm wrong) was in my 13 GT. I've since owned a 2018 GT PP2 and a 2020 GT PP1. My current 24 GTPP feels almost identical to my others. That being said I've never had a issue with this gearbox like others have. I don't track my car so that may have something to do with it. Is it as good as a Tremac or something you'll find in a bimmer ? no. will it be just fine for 98% of regular folks ? absolutely

Sounds about right. Before that there was the T 45 which was new in 96, The first ones (mine included) had issues with the 3-4 shift fork. Mine hasn't failed as the failure tended to show up in tracked cars. Ford would have had no reason to change the transmission until the more powerful coyote engine came along and they needed a beefier transmission.

My 2020 Mustang GT has the MT82-D4 and the twin disc clutch (stock). This car is a big improvement over my previous car which was a 2015. Current car also has the FP performance pack install last year at around 8,000 miles. Never any shifting issues at high rpms and this overall no issues period. Also had a getrag 6speed in one '94 Supra twin turbo and a 5 speed in my 930 Turbo cab. My current setup is certainly the best out of all of 'em.

I had a 16 GT PP with the MT-82 and had no issues other than notchy in the cold and a few third gear lockouts. But that was minor. I have no issues with this one and feel it’s better. My problem is where the clutch engages. It’s way too far at the top of the pedal travel. i preferred it near the bottom of the travel on my 16. Just takes some getting used too.

For those who have driven both the 3160 and the MT-82 - can a MGW on the Getrag get fairly close to the Tremec in feel? Or is it still a huge gap?

I had a 2019 GT that I tracked with an MT82 D4. Loved it. I don't doubt it's not as rugged as the Tremec, but it was fast and smooth and trouble free for me. I did not drag race and I did not go out of my way to force gear shifts. I did get the occasional 2nd to 3rd difficulty (maybe 5 times in 3 years), but I am willing to sacrifice that fraction of a second to get a smooth upshift.
The rev matching feature was fine for daily driving but not quick enough at the track so I had to disable it. Like others said a little notchy when cold but the best manual gearbox I've used, and I've only ever driven manual since 1991.
I'm looking forward to my 2024 that will have different gearing. I don't know if the 2024 retains the MT82 D4 or if it was updated. My usual tracks will be 2-3-4 instead of 2-3.
