Mustang in production sent to body shop?

I've got a dark horse premium due to be complete October 9th. Just called Ford customer care to see how it was doing. Maybe I got a new guy, but he let it slip that the car was sent to the body shop. Has anybody else had this? Or anybody possibly have any idea why they would send a car in production to the body shop?

I would have asked him WHY it was sent to the body shop. That does not sound like a common thing; especially so close to completion?

This just means the car has started production. Mass automotive production has three main phases:

1. Body - the body shell is constructed from stamped sheetmetal and subassemblies.
   
   
2. Paint - the body shell is painted.
   
   
3. Final Assembly - all the parts, from the engine to the interior trim, are assembled to the painted body shell. At the end of final assembly, you have a running, driving car.
   

So if your car was sent to the body shop, that means it has started the first phase of production.

Appreciate that guys. Little freaked out there for a minute. Probably talked to the wrong CSR. When I asked why it might have "been sent" to the body shop, he told me it wasn't rare, like for example, "a pickup truck would go there for a bed liner, or other specific body shop installed option". Which didn't help to calm any nerves.

Podsadka is correct. Here is a suggestion.

Every gear-head should at sometime in their lives, go on a tour of a modern vehicle manufacturing plant. Fact is, some allow customers of high-end vehicles to actually watch theirs being made. It is actually a very entertaining and knowledge-gaining experience.

Seriously probably a new guy I talked to. He specifically said the car was "sent out to the body shop". Like didn't know what he was looking at. I watched a couple YouTube videos on flat rock plant last night while doing paperwork. Pretty awesome.

At the automobile assembly plants, BIW (body in white) is where the frame and body have been put together, but before it's been painted and before the engine/trans, various chassis sub-assemblies, and all the trim (e.g., electronics, seats, glass, etc.) has been added to the vehicle.

Generally speaking, the BIW vehicle will go through paint, dry, then it heads to trim, chassis, and final.

At the truck plants, the cab and bed go through paint together, but when they come out, they are split from one another and go to separate places, assembled, then come back together when they are both dropped on the frame before heading on for more (final) assembly.
