Careful with Costco gas. My wife had used it for years in our old FJ cruiser. After some time, the fuel pump float system got gummed up and the fuel tank would not register below 1/4 tank. After several tankful's of Chevron with Techron 91. The sending unit freed itself and now I have an accurate fuel gauge again. As a result, I always use Chevron.
Costco is Top Tier gasoline. Nothing to "be careful" about.

Top Tier sticker just means it has a qualifying detergent blend. It doesn't mean anything about the octane. It only tests for deposits.

I can't see how the previous poster's gas gauge failure was nothing more than coincidence, though.

By the way did you go back to Costco to discuss with them?
"I want to talk to your manager about getting a refund on my last tank of gas".

Costco is placarded as 'top tier' FWIW. Ever few tanks I pop over to Sheetz for a 93+E85 mix when the mood strikes.
Today I was on 'zero' for 3 miles and then had to wait in line about 10 min for my turn at the teat.

That's good, because I made no such claim otherwise. I never referenced it being related to octane, so your comment is perplexing.

You said you don't have to be careful with Costco gas. But you should still make sure it's performing like the octane you're expecting out of it.

I was referring to it being a Top Tier aka high quality gasoline.

Let me guess: Next you're going to tell us you perform octane tests with every fill up?

😆

No, but a lot of people have found certain brands of gas "93" to show knock on their cars when others don't

I know I am getting decent gas from either Sunoco or Mobil so that's the only places I get it from. I don't have a Costco membership but I don't get gas from Kroger or Speedway.

I do find that comment from Whipple very interesting. Costco is Top Tier and when tested, shown to be at its rated octane. I’ve used it for years and never had an issue.

I’m just glad it’s only the dh that has to pay more for premium. 😁

again, "top tier" just means it has a certain detergent package

Costco has has had a bad reputation on the forums for years, especially with supercharged cars

One of the ‘questions’ regarding membership gas relates to product stability. Unless it’s store brand no guarantee it will be there next week, and if it is, is it a ‘kenmore’ type of thing or more ‘craftsman’. Ie do they make and maintain or do they buy from whomever that meets the price and one month may be from supplier a and next from supplier b?

I’m well aware of that. I was referring to the statement from Whipple.

I‘ve been on here since 2015. There have been many treads about gas quality. Overall Shell and Chevron have had the least amount of issues (but not perfect). Costco, for the most part, has always been considered excellent gas.

I found this interesting.

It’s not just “membership” gas. It’s virtually every brand. There are many variables that go into producing gasoline long before it comes out of the pump.
