People on this thread and other threads online scare you into putting premium and I just don't understand why. If 87 was actually bad for the car, why would Ford put it on the gas cap and put it on the owners manual that it can take 87?
87 isn't bad for the car ... but higher octane fuel is BETTER than 87.

Beyond the obvious performance aspects of 93 vs. 87, also consider 93 has more detergents and additives that will keep the combustion chamber and your valves cleaner than 87.

It's been proven.. you sacrifice around 20hp running 87 in these cars.
I always use the highest octane I can find.
Here in Colorado. It’s 91 because of the altitude I don’t believe them.
When you get up in the mountains to fill up, you can get 91 octane, but it doesn’t contain any alcohol and mileage improves is unbelievable.
In the Denver area, we have to use a summer blend.
In the mountains , such as Park County they don’t use summer blend.

you also have 85 octane. I have been running the 86, that is Albuquerque regular in my 3V since 2013, but will not risk 85 ever, especially since ABQ and Denver are the same elevation.

@georgeMc ..... there are many, many reasons to use minimum RON 91 but 93 is even better. A major one (mentioned) is the compression ratio. Another is the plasma coated cylinder walls, pistons, fuel rails and reduced combustion chamber temperatures. Only in an emergency would I use below 91. Speak to any engine builder or google the topic. These 2024 gen 7 engines are works of art not kiddy-hauling Dodge Caravan plants and need and deserve good fuel. It's the price of admission into this club.

@roadpilot ..... and to add to your excellent advice - if you pull into a gas station and there is an 18 wheeler gas hauler there filling-up the tanks, drive away as it will take 24 hours for the crud that fill-up stirs in the tanks to settle back down......and you don't want to pump that into your baby!

Years ago this was probably true, not today though. Gas from the refineries goes through many filtering processes, to include at the gas station and your car.

I've only used 93 octane since I bought this car but I really don't have a reason why. I think it's mainly because I don't put a lot of miles on it so it doesn't sting as bad when I fill up. I still haven't been convinced that there is an real profound reason to use high octane other than maybe a slight boost in performance. But I baby this car so that really isn't even important to me. Guess I just drank the Kool-Aid.

@RLE55 ..... You may have misread my post. The crud isn't from the delivery trucks it's from accumulations in any of the older tanks that haven't been replaced with the newer composite ones and even they accumulate water in them due to phase separation and it gets spread throughout the tank. So - wait 24 hours.

Nah. S650 Mustangs love drinking ethanol, they're practically alcoholics. The ethanol-free gasoline at specialty stations is good for mixing with stabilizer for rarely-driven vintage cars. For a sports cars that's going to see more than 500 miles a year of road time, E10 is fine.

Higher octane allows the engine to run more aggressive timing. Ethanol's heat of vaporization provides cooling advantages. In modern engines like those in the S650, the only thing stopping us from running E85 is the size of the fuel pumps and injectors (stock pump can't go past E30).
